INTERVIEW

“Dew”

Three children, four grandchildren

Lycoming County

Trauma?

“Not really, only what I put myself through.”

Mental Illness?

Depression, anxiety, stopped taking meds–”felt like a guinea pig”

Addiction?

Yes, crack.

“Even though I didn’t believe alcohol was a problem, I used it as a gateway.”

[blames herself for addiction]

How long have you spent in jails/prisons in your life?

“On and off since 1995 due to my addiction.”

This time?

So far 4 ½ years

Sentenced to 6-15 years for an aggravated assault “that I did not commit.”

Said thrown from vehicle–handicapped man–in Superior Court right now in appeals

“I’m just praying.”

Court appointed attorney.

How were you treated by the judicial system?

“Like shit. Said I was a piece of shit. Treated me like I was a true monster. They got no video surveillance. I took it to trial. Guilty verdict. Some of the jurors were falling asleep.

Do you think you were treated worse because you are a woman/mother/addict?

(tears up, nods)

Plans for future? 

“Go to a Christian-based recovery program and move on with my life and become a better person. I learned from this.”

What do you do for fun?

Puzzles, ride motorcycles, spend time with grandbabies, nieces, nephews, crafts, video games
