How long have you been locked up in your whole life?

Six years

This time?

Six months

All for DUI’/parole violations

Substance abuse?

Heroin, cocaine, alcohol

Trauma?

Dad physically/mentally abusive

“He beat me with anything he could find. I felt worthless. He told me he wished I would have killed myself.”

Domestic violence as an adult

Teen–parents divorced, she and brother moved into own house, 13-14yrs old

At a party, watched a man get beaten “within an inch of his life.”

For retaliation, people kicked in doors, beat up brother, “They tortured me.”

Mental Illness?

PTSD, depression, anxiety, major depressive episodes
Sixth DUI–not sentenced yet

Past four years–five deaths–ex died of overdose in 2020, grandfather died 9/21, best friend died 8/22, dad died March of 2024, Uncle died May 2024

Started drinking/using–hadn’t since 2017

How were you treated by police?

“One police officer stalked me. They followed me around town when I was driving–one said, ‘I’m just letting you know I’m gonna get you.’”

“I was definitely targeted.”

Were you judged worse because you’re a mother?

“Definitely. Everyone in that town was on the lookout, they called CYS on me.”

Is prison rehabilitative?

I can’t get into any classes. I just started my AA group because I can’t get into any meetings.”

What do you want people to know about prison?

“Use the programs to your advantage. Take it seriously or you’ll come back. They’ll keep you.”

What do you do for fun?

Sing, I love music, scrapbooking, photography, exercise, sports
