Lolita…

December 20th, 2024

Friday

12:04am

I can’t sleep. I’ve been basically sleeping for a week, so Daisy made me (I was willing) drink a bunch of coffee to get out of my funk, which worked, but now I can’t sleep. Commissary tomorrow, so I’ll have my own coffee and I won’t be forced to share it with Swiper, because she left. Thank God for that, but now we have to worry about who we’ll get to replace her. At least I have a lock now, for my locker. Ironically, Swiper gave me hers, so I couldn’t use it while she was here because, obviously, she knew the combination.

I’m glad she’s gone and I hope she doesn’t come back.

I wonder if I’ll sleep at all tonight. I told Stryder that I was going to write Sassypants a letter and send it to him so he could send it to her. I have a virtual visit with him tomorrow afternoon.

Boy, there are farts galore this time of night. At least Swiper’s not here to announce every single one.

People fart, lady.

Get over it.

I wonder if she’ll keep stealing things, which is what got her in prison four times. My feeling is yes. I’ve been really depressed about another Christmas in jail. And next Christmas too. I still can’t believe my stupid lawyer said he didn’t know what I was talking about when I mentioned petitioning the court for a shorter stay at the Women’s Center.

Asshole.

No word on Cool. I take it he’s in a permanently psychotic state these days. Paranoid schizophrenic, they say.

I can’t say I’m surprised.

Sad, but not surprised.

The new lady next door, Sondra, calls me Pearl, for reasons unknown. She says it’s off some 70s TV show. She’s still up too, watching TV. I wish I had a TV, but it’s too expensive to ask anyone for. Nobody has an extra $230 laying around, except maybe my parents, and they’re too stingy with money to ask.

I’m afraid this place, this system, is breaking my spirit. I think about the writing I did in 2007-08, when I wrote Kidowed during and after Kaylee’s death, and I still had a sense of humor. I don’t anymore, it seems. I used to be funny, seemingly effortlessly, even during those dark times, as if I still had hope that things would be better in the future if I just could get through this part. But it didn’t. Not for the next 17 years it didn’t.

How much can one person take?

I don’t have any hope for the future anymore. I don’t even believe that I have the smallest iota of control over my life anymore. I used to believe I was in charge of my life, and that I made the good things in my life happen.

Now, that idea seems monumentally stupid.

Now, life seems very random and luck-based. Self-determination seems like an oxymoron. In this Short Reads class I’m going to on Tuesdays, there is this teacher who says she doesn’t believe in God. My problem is that I believe in God, but I don’t like Him or trust Him, because he has treated me like he hates me. Why does nothing good ever happen to me? My life is just misery following misery. I wonder if people who commit suicide don’t believe in Hell, or they believe in it, but figure that it must be better than this shithole life? Eternal burning in hellfire sounds better than life on Earth?

I can believe it these days.

Saturday

7:02pm

Cool came home to my parent’s house. Apparently he’s staying in the apartment most of the time. Seems weird to me that he came home to not be alone, and is now isolating himself. I had hoped things would become more normal if he was around family. He brought his dog, who he renamed Falcore from Sunshine.

Hm.

I’d be interested to see what he’s posting on social media now that he’s home. I hope he doesn’t act like a crazy wacko in front of the kids.

December 22nd, 2024

Sunday

11:55am

It is rumored that Lolita came back to prison after only being gone for four days, and that she may have killed herself today. There was a weird lockdown and everything was running late, and Zuko just told me in the bathroom. I heard that he was back with new charges a couple of days ago, and that she was “freaking out” in the Infirmary, but then I didn’t hear anything after that.

She gave me her eyeshadow when she left.

I’m wearing it today.

4:08pm

It’s true.

Lolita killed herself.

Zuko cried.

I hugged her for a long time.

I’m incredibly sad.

After all that she had survived, she died all alone in a cinderblock cell…Zuko kept saying, “I wish somebody would have helped her…there’s no help here…(sob).”

This place will crush your soul…although it sounded more like it blasted hers to smithereens. There’s rumors of screaming and blood and a broken window…I wonder if the shattering of a soul makes the same noise as a window spider-webbing into a million pieces…

It’s inconceivable that such small buildings can house so much pain…you’d think they’d just burst apart with the weight of it.

But instead, people’s brains crack in half, and their spirits snap too.

I wonder how such a monumental happening could not make a noise?

I wonder if she cried,

Or if there was a steely resolve,

When she decided to die,

Instead of living

In this brick and mortar cage.

When she took her last breath,

Was she relieved?

Was she finally free?

Sometimes I wonder

How the Earth doesn’t shift on its axis

Every time a soul gives up

They talk about strength, resilience,

And the indomitable human spirit.

But I know a place that can dominate

A human spirit,

Conquer it,

And smash it,

Stomp it,

Until it loses all hope.

And the despair takes over

Like a creeping black mist,

And the spirit starts thinking about Heaven,

Instead of this Hell on Earth

That is Muncy State Prison

In Pennsylvania,

America.

Land of the free?

Is she finally free?

Did it make a noise?

Random Sex, NA, and Jacob the Ghost

WOMEN’S CENTER

April 24th, 2018

Day 295

Tuesday

6pm

My rheumatology appointment was okay. My doctor said that I had protein in my urine last time, so he repeated the urinalysis.

I hope my kidneys are okay.

I talked to my sister, and she “yes”’d me to death–yes I’ll call my therapist, yes, I’ll call my psychiatrist, etc.

She’s never like that.

Usually when I tell her she needs help, she says that I’m nobody to be giving her advice, and disregards it immediately. I think she needs to be hospitalized. She seems to think she can will herself to be better–she kept saying, “I’m going to try really hard to get better!” insistently. I told her that she needed to ask for help in order to get better.

Duh.

She should know that by now.

I’m worried about her.

She seems desperately lonely.

April 25th, 2018

Day 296

Wednesday

1pm

I talked to Elizabeth, my sister…she was somewhere where it was really loud and there were a lot of people talking…it sounded like a bar. She had to go outside so that she could hear me. When I asked her where she was, she said, “Franklin…a lot of stuff has happened since you went away…” I said, “Yeah, I know you’re in Franklin, but WHERE/” And then she told me that she had to go eat lunch and hung up on me. She didn’t seem to remember talking to me yesterday at all…it makes me sad.

In any case, right now we’re in some stupid drug and alcohol group with a new lady they shipped in…she didn’t bring anything for us to do. We’re talking about conspiracy theories surrounding 9/11.

Gawd.

How incredibly stupid. This has nothing to do with drugs or alcohol. This lady is just letting Jolene, one of the new women, talk and talk and talk…I know her whole life story six times over now.

I’m so tired today. The weather is cold and rainy, and all of my joints hurt.

Uh oh.

Now Jolene has worked herself up to the point of crying.

Ugh.

When is this going to be over?

The other new woman’s name is Jo. Now Jolene is talking about babies dying and child molesters getting their kids back before drug dealers. She’s got a $2 million lawsuit against an Acorn gas station where her boyfriend beat the shit out of her on camera and they didn’t call 911.

Hm.

Hope she wins.

She says her whole face was reconstructed.

Yuh oh.

Now she’s talking about seeing God.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm…….now she’s talking about abortions. She’s using this as a personal therapy session. Now onto abusive boyfriends and how they manipulate and brainwash you. Now onto sex with random guys.

Huh.

This is at least a little interesting. Now how jail is easier than real life. Now onto being addicted to cigarettes. Now how we don’t speak to our families.

I’m worried about Elizabeth.

April 26th, 2018

Day 297

Thursday

9:30am

Mr. Big is making me read the NA book:

“Just For Today–Living the Program”

“Worrying is a lack of faith.”

“We try to avoid the self-deception of arrogance and self-righteousness.”

“When we accept that our addiction caused our own hell and that there is a power available to help us, we begin to make progress in solving our problems.”

“Each day most of us ask our Higher Power to help us stay clean, and each night we give thanks for the gift of recovery.”

“One way that we can continue a conscious contact [with a Higher Power] especially in hard times, is to list the things for which we are grateful.”

“Gradually, as we become more God-centered than self-centered, our despair turns to hope.”

“Any clean addict is a miracle. We keep this miracle alive in ongoing recovery with positive attitudes.”

“Three basic spiritual principles are honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness.”

“One way to practice the principles of how [the program works] is by taking a daily inventory.”

“We put spiritual living first and learn to use patience, tolerance, and humility in our daily affairs.”

“We begin to feel loveable which is a feeling totally alien to our old egocentric selves.”

“By asking for help, we can change.”

“We need to recognize two of our seemingly inherent enemies, apathy and procrastination.’

“A relapse and sometimes subsequent death of someone close to us can do the job of awakening us to the necessity for vigorous personal action.”

“We may become angry and resentful toward anyone or anything.”

7pm

For some reason the Sleep Nazi is on 2nd shift today–ha! She joked to Loreen that it would smell better if she left the room, and Loreen snarked back, “Oh yeah? You don’t like the smell of failure and bad decisions?”

Funny.

I guess I’d better go get ready for the meeting.

Now Mr. Big tells me that until I write my essays, I cannot file my early release paperwork with the Courthouse!

WHAT?!!!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR……………………

11pm

Loreen just told me she saw a ghost.

Hm.

It’s rumored around here that there was a boy named Jacob that hung himself in one of the bathrooms some time ago and now his spirit haunts the place.

I believe it.

Loreen was really spooked, so spooked that she spooked the staff. She says he’s about 5’10” and has brown hair. The boy who hung himself was 15 years old, so the story goes. I tried to look it up online but the only death I found was a six-year old girl in the early 1900s that died in a fire. This place is very old.

In other news, Nikolai came to the meeting and was very shaken up. She finally shared at the end of the meeting, while crying, that she wasn’t doing well and wanted to be back in the Women’s Center. I feel so bad for her. She’s been institutionalized her entire adult life, and she doesn’t even know how to live “on the outside,” much less do it with a newborn baby.

Poor girl.

I hope to God she doesn’t relapse.

The Stupid Asshole she’s living with, I’ll call him SA for short, is a controlling demon with so many issues that Nikolai is having a really hard time dealing with him and the baby.

April 29th, 2018

Saturday

299

6:30pm

It’s cold and rainy today, and my joints hurt, and I REALLY don’t want to go to this meeting in Galeton tonight. Georgia, one of the new residential workers, texted Mr. Big to see if I could stay back and write these three stupid essays he wants me to write, but he hasn’t answered.

I guess I’m staying then.

I hope he doesn’t pitch a fit when he looks at his phone. I’m writing one now on “How My Actions Affect Other People.”

It is, of course, all bullshit.

Better get back to it.

The Power of the Spirit, Santa Claus, and Suicide by Cop

MUNCY STATE PRISON

December 8th, 2024

Sunday

9:49am

We didn’t shop again on Friday.

Sucks.

No coffee. I two-for-one’d an e-cigarette from Zuko, so at least there’s that. I got “Brown Girl Dreaming” by Jacqueline Woodson, which is a memoir, but it’s written all in poems.

Swiper hasn’t shopped in two weeks, which is why I’m out of coffee, creamer, and sugar. She doesn’t give two shits if I go without. She even had some left after I ran out, and didn’t offer me any.

Jerk.

Maybe I’ll write a blog.

Book:

Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss (The Seven Stages of Power and Healing) © 1996, 2017

P. 77

All three traditions [Christian, Eastern, Judaism] hold that releasing one’s spirit into the physical world through fear or negativity is a faithless act of choosing personal will over the will of the heavens.”

P. 78

“Three truths are common to these spiritual traditions and to the principles of medical intuition.

  1. Misdirecting the power of one’s spirit will generate consequences to one’s body and life.
  2. Every human being will encounter a series of challenges that tests his allegiance to heaven. These tests will come in the form of the disintegration of one’s physical power base: the inevitable loss of wealth, family, health, or worldly power. The loss will activate a crisis of faith, forcing one to ask, ‘What is it, or who is it, that I have faith in?’ or ‘Into whose hands have I commended my spirit?’ Apart from such major losses, the trigger that causes people to seek deeper meaning and psychological and spiritual ‘ascension’ is usually a physical disorder that creates a personal or professional earthquake. We all tend to look upward when the ground beneath our feet shifts out of control.
  3. To heal from the misdirection of one’s spirit, one has to be willing to act to release the past, cleanse one’s spirit, and return to the present moment. ‘Believe as if it were true now’ is a spiritual command from the Book of Daniel to visualize or pray in present time.”

December 9th, 2024

Monday

1:50pm

My mother messaged me on the kiosk, which means that somehow she’s approved again. She says that Superman still wants to believe in Santa Claus, but King is over it. She also said she sent me a picture booklet of the kids, and that they’re not going to Florida this year, only Splash Lagoon. They boys are going to be late to school because they have physicals this morning.

No other news.

I should probably write them a letter. It’s been a while. I wrote my mother back thanks for the pictures, I haven’t gotten them yet, and I’m doing okay but my lupus symptoms are worse, like they were in my 20s, and I have asked to see a rheumatologist. Also that I’m depressed and they just upped my Prozac again. I also told her that I talked to my stupid lawyer about petitioning the court for a shorter stay at the Women’s Center, and he said he didn’t know what I was talking about, as if I had made the entire thing up. When I said that he was the one who had told me about the petition in the first place (like–where the fuck would I get that from??), he said, “No, I didn’t, No, I didn’t, No, I didn’t,” three times in a row like that.

Like–do you have dementia, sir??

Why on God’s green Earth would I bring that up to you if you hadn’t told me that??

I hate the entire criminal justice system.

In other news, I haven’t been called down for a sick call to discuss lupus and wheelchair pushing, and no news about my boys and video visits.

I fucking hate this place.

4:40pm

Swiper found out today that she’s not leaving until 12/18/24.

Can’t come soon enough.

I talked to my mother. She said the boys went and got their physicals today and King is three inches taller and 10lbs heavier than Superman. He is finally in the middle of the growth chart, while Superman is still at the bottom. My mother says he never fails to remind King that he is older, though.

By two minutes.

December 10th, 2024

Tuesday

4:43pm

My mother sent me a message telling me that Cool is not doing well and that he is having psychotic episodes more frequently.

This is very scary.

He’s going to end up dead or in prison. She wanted to know what my diagnosis was at Clarion and if I went voluntarily. I did go voluntarily, but only because they threatened to 302 me if I didn’t. I told her Bipolar I with Psychotic Features and Schizoaffective Disorder. She wants to know when I started having any insight that something was really wrong with me. For me it was seeing it in black and white on my medical record, and then in police reports.

I’m so worried about him.

He lives alone in the woods with a dog and a pig. No one would even know if he was suicidal. He would do very poorly in prison. I’m going to tell her to find out if there’s a CRISIS team in Vermont and try to get him some help.

December 12th, 2024

Thursday

2:42pm

I talked to my mother more about Cool. And about myself. She got mad when I said he was going to end up dead or in prison. She said they’re working with some kind of “coach” who is going to come up with some kind of plan for Cool. No news about that yet. She was supposed to meet with my parents last night.

I talked with Stryder briefly about it, not giving him many details, and he said that he already knew because of what Cool’s been posting on Facebook. Cool apparently thinks that the police sexually assaulted him a year ago when he had that motorcycle accident, and that he somehow still has semen in his lungs.

Bizarre.

I guess no more bizarre than thinking you are Jesus and have been tasked with saving the world, which is how my disease manifests.

I’m afraid Cool will commit suicide or get into a fight with the cops and be shot to death. Cool is apparently calling the police on speakerphone, videotaping these exchanges, and either live-streaming them or posting them online.

Fuck.

Pretty soon they’re going to charge him with filing false police reports, at the very least.

In news about my life, I went to the doctor here, and he gave me Voltaren gel for pain and two restrictions: no working outside and no extreme temperatures. This did not help at all, and didn’t get me off wheelchair pushing, even though, in reality, this is both working outside and in extreme temperatures. It’s not like we push them around INSIDE, duh.

But, no.

Doesn’t count, according to both CO Monster and Unit Manager Reibsome.

So I put another freaking Sick Call (another $5.00) and asked for a No Push/Pull Restriction.

Fucking assholes.

CO Monster, of course, made it about himself: “I had an ex-girlfriend whose mother had lupus, so I feel for ya.”

Fat lot of good THAT does me.

In other news, I have to call Paul tonight. He asked me when I’m getting out so he can take off work the following week and we can go on a mini-vacation.

I can’t wait.

It sounds like Heaven to me. Motorcycle will probably throw a fit and/or break up with me, but I’m finding is hard to care after his, “I’m the man who finally conquered Jess Kenley,” comment.

I’m reading this book about heaven called “Room of Marvels” by James Bryan Smith that I thought was a true story, but it’s fiction. It’s about a guy whose two-year-old dies and then he’s angry at God and can’t forgive him, even though he writes books about how great God is.

Sounds familiar.

So he goes on this silent retreat to some monastery, and has dreams about Heaven and its various rooms. I wonder if there are rooms in Heaven, and what they look like. All I’ve ever read about is beautiful, majestic outdoor scenes after the tunnel with the light, but there’s no tunnel in this book. He just falls asleep.

Daisy said that Swiper stole some coffee from her locker. I’m not surprised. She does some grimy shit. Commissary tomorrow, hopefully.

4:17pm

I talked to my mother. Cool is worse. He went to the neighbor’s house and started screaming at them and threatening them. My parents are thinking of getting guardianship of him. The police were apparently called, but they didn’t do anything.

I’m afraid Cool is going to commit suicide by cop.

INTERVIEW: Jupiter

MUNCY STATE PRISON

INTERVIEW

“Jupiter”

Childhood sexual abuse, neglect/emotional abuse by mother–led to physical abuse in relationships as an adult

Addiction?

Mostly alcohol, marijuana started when stepdad provided alcohol at 10yrs old

How long have you been incarcerated in your lifetime?

Seven years

This time?

Three years

What happened?

Mismanaged mental health, awful history of coping with substances, DUI, slew of reckless endangerments–hit a pick-up truck, sideswiped a school bus, 7am, car died, sat there

Sentence: 1-2 years

Original charge–4th offense DUI with Child Endangerment, 2-5 years in 2018–maxes in August–has one year left.

Public Defender/Plea Deal

Wanted to take it to trial, threatened with being charged separately, not run concurrent, more time

Have you been to rehab?

Yes, once, in 2010–didn’t stay sober, didn’t want to go.

Police waited two hours to draw blood, mom had just died.

“Knowing what I know now, I should have worked on mental health stuff.”

Sexually abused by stepdad–hot tub, motorcycle, alcohol, Mom said not to act so slutty, Mom said Jupiter was jealous of her.

–Had DUI in 200 or 2001 first time

How were you treated by the police, court system, etc.?

“I was held to a higher standard because I had a college education, and because I was a woman and a mother.”

What are your plans for the future?

“I probably down the road want to be a domestic violence counselor, want to let other women know that they’re not alone, we can make a difference, our stories matter.”

DUI’s seemed to always correlate with negative life events

“I don’t think the system cares about that stuff.”

Do you think prison is rehabilitative?

“No. Not the DOC (Department of Corrections), I have met people or groups here that have helped me. I feel like it’s a numbers game.”

What do you do for fun?

“I love to be outside, hiking, skiing, music is a must. Playing with my girls when they were little.”

“I feel [the DOC] needs a lot more trauma-informed people in the system. The Parole Board told me I’m not capable of change. It makes no sense to not understand the person as a whole.”

Chester Bennington and Forgiving God

MUNCY STATE PRISON

Still December 4th, 2024

9:04pm

My eyes are bloodshot. I’m exhausted. Better than being manic. Bingo tonight. Swiper and I both called Bingo at the same time, so they called another number as a tiebreaker, and Swiper won. Zuko later said that it was a metaphor for my life here: I win something and then Swiper steals it from me.

Funny.

One the radio:

“I let my guard down,

And then you pulled the rug,

I was getting kind of used to being someone you loved…”

The “You’’ in this metaphor is God. In 2003, my life was going great, and then Ethan died and it never recovered, no matter how hard I tried.

In SUDS (Substance Use Disorder Something or Other) today we watched a part of a documentary of Chester Bennington, the lead singer of Linkin Park who killed himself. I fail to see what this has to do with addiction treatment, but whatever. Bennington said things while he was alive like, “I didn’t know who I was,” “I was a mess,” “I was surviving,” and “Life if tough, I’m kind of broken.” He also said, “Every year of my life has been a rough year,” and that he hated the world.

He sounds a lot like me.

I have to let my anger at God go, or I’m afraid I’m just going to keep attracting events and circumstances to my life that victimize me. I have to forgive God, but I don’t know how.

Daisy and I were talking today about how she’s an abuser-magnet.

I’m a tragedy magnet.

Look up Max Lucado– “Why Would You Do This to Me?”

Stretch Marks, Inc. Magazine, and The Children’s Bill of RIghts

WOMEN’S CENTER

April 23rd, 2018

Monday

Day 294

8am

I go to both of my therapists today–one in Smethport and one in Wellsboro. Five hours in the car–yay. On the bright side, I do get out of the Center for a while–most of the day. Sometimes it’s exhausting to be here. It makes me just want to sleep–which is not allowed except sometimes on the weekend when Big isn’t here.

It’s nice and sunshiney out today–I wonder if it will warm up. Yesterday was beautiful. I even wore a dress. I can’t wait to get the fuck out of here, eve if it is to go on house arrest.

I can’t fucking wait.

The two new women seem to be adjusting well. Loreen has been asking to apply for senior resident, but Big hasn’t given her an application. I have to ask him what’s going to happen to me if I don’t get early release–will I go to rehab?

I asked–he said no, I would just stay here until July.

Fucking great.

So then I asked him if I could call the Courthouse and he said I’d have to ask the Big Boss, who is never, ever around. Yesterday my Dad asked me how the college thing was going, and I had to tell him that no one ever got back to me about sponsorship for my scholarship–not even the Presbyterian Church.

11:30am

Therapy over.

We talked about my feelings of self-worth (or worthlessness, really) related to Mr. Big. He just strikes a negative chord with me and I can’t seem to shake it. I’ve had a very hard month. I need to tell myself that I AM important, and I’m not small with a meaningless life.

I’m just sad.

Depressed, even.

I think I’m going to change into a dress when I get back to the Center–maybe that will help me feel better. It’s artificial and shallow, but sometimes it helps to look nice.
Great.

We’re going into Roulette.

That always makes me sad because it’s where Tiger lives with her Dad.

We picked up a guy that probably weighs 400lbs. With him and the driver and me, it probably adds over 800lbs to this van.

Of course.

We drove right by Dubya’s house.

Now Joan Osbourne is crooning, “What if God Was One of Us?” on the radio.

Where we stopped to let him out, they had a sign in the garden that said, “GROW, Dammit.”

Funny.

Every time I look at Dubya’s house I think of Lilly saying, “Daddy and Macy don’t like each other, but they got married anyway.”

God.

Now on the radio is, “Heaven is a Place On Earth.”

I sure hope not.

I told Big the other day that I didn’t believe in Heaven and an afterlife for my children, I would put a bullet in my head.

No joke.

I have to believe that I’ll see my babies again.

Have to.

Maybe I won’t have time to change. It’s already noon and we’re not even in Coudersport.

When I think about Dubya sometimes, I think about how crazy in love we were. We loved each other so much that it ruined him when I left.

I couldn’t stay any longer.

He became the cynical, nasty, judgmental person that he is today.

Now on the radio is, “It must have been love, but it’s over now…”

God, are you stalking me again?

Now we’re in Coudersport. The river is beautiful and sparkly reflecting the sun. Now we get to pass the road my other two kids live on.

God.

I’m so sad.

Two more months at the Center.

I don’t know if I can do it.

I guess I don’t have a choice.

I was so hopeful about getting early release.

Now, nothing.

No hope left.

I figured if they let Pink out early, they would do it for anybody. But this is me we’re talking about. Me with the worst reputation and luck ever.

Great.

Now a cop car is following us. The driver just yelled, “I am not in the mood for it today!” at the cop.

Oh, good. He turned. It was probably Copperhead Collins, the guy who arrested me.

Fucking douchebag snake anyway.

Anyway, they probably wouldn’t let me out early anyway because I’m on Restriction. Of course Pink got FIRED and they didn’t put her on Restriction. I just quit. Fuck them anyway. I have to stop thinking about it or I’ll get super pissed.

I matter.

I am important, no matter how people treat me.

 I matter.

I have to learn how to be good to myself. That’s what my therapist says, anyway. I wonder what my other therapist will say this afternoon.

We just passed a flag flying at half-mast. I wonder what that’s for. All I know that’s special about today is that it’s one of my former best friends’ birthday, and it’s National Picnic Day.

Kind of muddy and soggy for a picnic. Now we’re in Gold. I’m nauseated from writing in the back seat.

Tomorrow I get to go to Pittsburgh and relive all of those memories from The Glory Days of my life. It’ll probably make me even sadder.

God.

Will my life ever get better?

Must stop writing or I’m going to puke cinnamon flavored coffee all over this van.

12:20pm

Almost there.

The CDC just warned everybody to avoid all Romaine lettuce because it might be contaminated with E. Coli.

Ew.

One of my favorite songs is on the radio: “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down” by Fallout Boy.

We’re here.

Finally.

It smells like farts in here.

1:30pm

Now Tori and I are off to Wellsboro. Tori says she has a stretch mark on her vagina. How do you gain weight in your vagina? She also says she has butt stretch marks from her butthole out like rays of sunshine.

Super funny.

2pm

Huh.

Putting on a dress and talking to Tori really helped my mood. She’s hilarious in a self-deprecating way, which I appreciate. She makes people feel comfortable and forget their woes for a while. I love her. She really is a wonderful person, brilliant and generous, kind and funny. I don’t know about romantic love for her, though.

10pm

Hm.

Hard, long day. Will have to write about it tomorrow because it’s lights out. Called my ex-brother-in-law and found out my sister is having a bipolar depressive episode right now. I prayed for her. I don’t know what else to do. By the sounds of it she needs to be hospitalized.

Hm.

More tomorrow.

1:40am

Can’t sleep. Worried about Justme. I guess I’ll clean my room.

Well, that didn’t work. I found an Inc. magazine that grabbed my attention. Its cover says “Rising Stars, Overachieving and Under 30.”

Well, that’s a must-read.

I don’t have any idea how I started getting this magazine, but I like it. Me time.

WTF.

Pittsburgh was the No. 1 city in the U.S. for job openings in 2017.

It’s no wonder I love that city so much.

“You need to know your most passionate, best employees who are going to come up with new ideas for your company, because those extremers in your business are the ones who live it, breathe it, can’t stop thinking about it, who are going to find the next realm of where you should be going.”

–Sarah Robb O’Hagan, CEO of Flywheel

This is how I was when I lived in Pittsburgh. Always throwing myself into the work, work, work, work, because I knew I was making a difference in the lives of animals and their owners every day. I was a technician, an educator, a manager, I did everything. And I did it to the very best of my ability. That was me 15 years ago. And that’s what Big reminds me of.

Wow–new word I didn’t know: Permanxiety (noun): “A near constant state” of unease, travelers feel from “terrorism, security, neo-isolationism, racial tension, Trumpism…the widening economic gap, culture wars, climate change”

–Source: Skift

OMG and here’s an adjective for you:

“Too Big To Tax,” which means: “Various tax credits and tax breaks” meant Amazon made $5.6 billion in 2017 but paid no federal tax.

Unbelievable.

Unrelated:

Jeff Bezos became the first human worth more than $100 billion.

Source: The New Republic.

Sickening.

Blech.

In other news:

Martha Stewart only sleeps four hours per night. Jeff Bezos sleeps eight. A survey by the authors of the upcoming book “My Morning Routine,” Benjamin Spall and Michael Xander, found that 85% of business founders slept more than seven hours per night.

Hm.

Wow. This 25 year old woman, Leigh-Kathryn Bonner, in N.C. founded a company called Bee Downtown, where they install honeybee hives on companies’ property.

Cool.

She says that bees are a gateway “to get people excited about agriculture and sustainability.”

COOL.

And way to go, her!

What an idea!

Nice.

The next business in their “Rising Stars” article is No Cow by Daniel Katz, which sells low-sugar and dairy-free protein bars, cookies, and nut butters.

Omg.

Thinking sustainably is catching on. My mind is blown.

Wow.

This next one, by Adelle Archer, 27–I have to copy the entire thing.

It says:

ETERNEVA–Remembering Loved Ones

More Americans are opting for cremation in 2015, for the first time cremations outnumbered burials. With Eterneva, Adelle Archer turns those ashes into diamonds. Human remains contain carbon; Eterneva takes some of those ashes and, along with an industrial diamond lab in Amsterdam and cutters in Antwerp, turns them into jewelry. Customers choose design, color, and weight to commemorate their loved one; a 0.5-carat diamond costs about $7,000. The company stays in close contact with the families during the eight-month production process and, whenever possible, hand delivers the finished product. Archer conceived the idea after her mentor died in 2015. She seeks to change our relationship with loss–and help eternalize loved ones. “A diamond lasts more than a single generation,” Archer says. “An urn of ashes won’t.” –Kevin J. Ryan

Super awesome.

The next company creates personalized skin care regimens. Called Helloava By Siqi Mou, 28

The next one is called Naturall Club and was founded by Muhga Eltigani, 26. She makes all natural hair care products.

Next up, a statistic: White men hold more than two out of every three seats on the boards of Fortune 500 companies.

Oh, cool. The next article is called Wellness Works, and is about promoting a healthy lifestyle in the office.

This company called Drizly offers cycling, yoga, and boxing sessions both at studios and on-site, and has fresh food delivered to the office for their employees! Now THEY are onto something. They say, “We want to empower our employees to create their own fitness and health promoting activities, which helps create a culture of wellness at Drizly.” The article goes on to say that “there is plenty of data connecting wellness at work with better corporate performance.”

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, MedPlast.

The annual cost of work-related stress in the U.S., according to the American Institute of Stress (I wonder what kind of wellness program THEIR employees get!) is $300 billion.

Keith P. Mankin, whose All Peer Consulting, in Dallas, develops wellness programs for small businesses, says “even modest perks, like a 10-minute chair massage, show that you care about employee well-being.”

Another quote: “If you’re keen on helping employees reduce stress, ongoing research increasingly demonstrates the physical and mental health benefits of meditation.”

“Thriving is about creating a culture that promotes succeeding at life as well as at work.” Renee Moorefield, Global Wellness Institute

Aw, this next article is called “Why, Grandmother, What a Cool Robot You Have.”

Stat: “Half of adults over 65 who live independently report feeling excessively lonely, and more than a third say they see only one other person in a typical week.”

That’s terribly sad.

So they came up with ElliQ, a “social robot” from Intuition Robotics, which is based in Jerusalem. ElliQ responds to voice commands, and reads its users their emails and text messages, displays new photos and videos sent by family members, and reminds them of things like doctor’s appointments and when to take medications.

Wow. Minimum wage in Massachusetts is $11/hr.

Children’s Bill of Rights

As they proceed with the process of dissolving their adult relationship, both parents recognize and acknowledge the following minimum rights of their children:

  1. Right to a continuing relationship with both parents.
  2. Right to be treated as an important human being with unique feelings, ideas and desires.
  3. Right to continuing care and guidance from both parents.
  4. Right to know and appreciate what is good in each parent without one parent degrading the other.
  5. Right to express love, affection, and respect for each parent without having to suppress that love because of fear of disapproval by the other parent.
  6. Right to know that the parents’ decision to live separately was not the responsibility of the child.
  7. Right not to be a source of argument between the parents.
  8. Right to honest answers to questions about the changing family relationships.
  9. Right to be able to experience regular and consistent contact with both parents and to know the reason for cancellation of time of change of plans.
  10. Right to have a relaxed, secure relationship with both parents without being placed in a position to manipulate one parent against the other.

Commissary, Vicodin, and Nightmares

MUNCY STATE PRISON

December 3rd, 2024

Tuesday

9:30pm

We finally got Commissary today, after going without it for a week and a half. I drank too much coffee, pooped three times, and talked a lot. Previous to today, I had slept for a week, so I had some excess energy, which is new for me here. Usually, I feel like I’m slogging through every day, waiting for the next time I can lie down.

I’m wondering if I should write Mr. Big a letter apologizing for my last email to him, and telling him that I was manic and talking crazy. Probably I should.

(I didn’t.)

I tried to call my lawyer today, but no answer. I called Gem, Motorcycle, Stryder (twice), and Paul. Paul didn’t answer and he had said that we have a video visit tomorrow, but it’s not on the schedule, so I asked Stryder to message him and ask what’s up.

Everything is so difficult here.

There are almost 100 people on this Unit, and over 1100 on the “campus” now. I don’t know why they call it a campus, it’s much more like a hostile military compound.

I got another interview for Thursday.

Daisy made a giant peanut butter/chocolate cookie roll today. She called it “Death by Chocolate” and Swiper said that’s the best way to die. My hips are killing me. I can’t even sit cross-legged anymore. I’m wondering how I’m ever going to have sex. Something’s gotta give. I need better pain control than Mobic, but the pills I was taking apparently make me an insane crazy person, and nobody prescribes narcotics anymore. Sometimes weed makes me think I’m Jesus and fall down a lot.

No.

Vicodin seems like the answer, but you can’t get it anywhere now, which is bullshit. I don’t ever want to be addicted to it again, but that takes a lot of effort. You don’t get addicted by taking one or two tablets a day. I wonder if my rheumatologist would prescribe it. I guess I’ll find out in a year. I can probably reestablish a relationship with him while I’m at the Women’s Center, but he probably would never prescribe them with my history of addiction.

It’s no wonder people use heroin.

It’s cheaper and easier to get than Vicodin.

Bullshit.

Also bullshit? Momma Bear chairing the AA/NA meetings on the Unit and then telling someone during a fight this morning to go get high. She’s supposed to be a role model, not someone who digs to the bottom of the garbage dumpster for insults about addicts.

I got new mascara today and Lolita gave me some Pink Oil, so I did my hair and face pretty.

It made me feel better.

Lolita is leaving in 11 days. I wonder if she’d do an interview. Her story is crazy. She was kidnapped and held in a trap house basement for days and raped and beaten several times. Then a man was sent downstairs, presumably to rape her, and he felt sorry for her, so he came back the next day with a sawed-off shotgun to rescue her, but was killed by her captors.

Then they made her clean up the mess.

She was charged with something ridiculous like abuse of a corpse and accessory to homicide and served seven years in prison. She’s back on a technical parole violation for drinking alcohol.

Ridiculous.

December 4th, 2024

Wednesday

3:15am

Nightmares.

The kind where you wonder how your brain is so very imaginative.

Horrifying.

Stryder was in it.

In the nightmare I was was having nightmares, and he was the only one who cared enough to ask me to describe it to him.

But then he seemed evil too.

Do dreams really mean anything?

Last night when we were talking on the phone, he said he didn’t know if he wanted to set up a video visit, because when he saw me it would be hard not to fall in love with me again.

In the dream, I got the distinct feeling that he was toying with me, the way a cat will torture a small animal to death before he devours it.

Is that what he’s doing?

Or does it mean nothing?

I’m tired, but I don’t want to go back to sleep.

In another nightmare, I thought I woke up, and stood up to go over to some man I was with and cuddle him and tell him about my nightmare, but some laughing, evil spirit-lady was trying to invade my body. She kept laughing and giggling and saying that I couldn’t keep her out of me, no matter how hard I tried. I had the distinct feeling that she was my mental illness.

Bipolar disorder in a cackling, sinister apparition.

Then I woke up again, or thought I did, and actually saw the wall I sleep next to, but I wasn’t awake at all.

I see prison walls in my nightmares.

When I realized I wasn’t really awake, and it was a trick, I summoned all of my strength to open my eyes.

Who would’ve thought I’d be so glad to see a prison wall?

Same wall.

I prayed to God twice today to get me out of here, but it’s no use. I’m just going to another prison. A much nicer prison, but still a prison. 2025 isn’t even here, and it’s already gone. This one-to-three year sentence turned into four.

That’s how the “justice” system works.

I don’t want to go back to sleep.

I have to push Ms. Grumpy Crabass all over creation tomorrow (today) in my new, surprisingly painful boots. I should’ve kept my old boots with holes in them.

That’s the thing about prison–just when you think something better is going to happen, something much worse happens.

Prison Rule #1: Things can always get worse.

Like having the first decent day in a long time and then having nightmares all night following it.

INTERVIEW–“Cricket”

INTERVIEW

“Cricket”

Female

40yrs

Three children

Trauma?

“Yes, my dad was in and out of jail my whole life, mom was an alcoholic. I became a parent at five years old to my siblings. I don’t remember the sexual abuse, but I know it happened. My maternal grandmother died of cancer when I was 10 years old, she was my safe haven. I watched my other grandma die of cancer. There was always violence in my home.”

“The love of my life has schizophrenia. Bath salts–everything changed overnight. I got us out of the shelter and got us a house, but that was my undoing–my grandma died at the same time. We could never be together. I ended up having a nervous breakdown, wouldn’t leave the apartment for a year.”

New husband —> Volatile relationship–domestic violence.

“He almost killed me a couple of times.”

“I’m married to my best friend. We went through hell. In a sick way, he showed me how to grieve.”

Mental Illness?

Depression, PTSD, ADHD, generalized anxiety

“I used to be on meds on the outside, but they won’t give me [here] what I was on.”

Addiction?

“Yes, started using at 13. It became a problem at 21 years old, I was on Medically Assisted Treatment [Suboxone/Subutex/etc.] successfully, but after breakdown…speed, coke, fentanyl.”

How long have you been in prison this time?

One year, five months.

In your lifetime?

Eight times–possession, paraphernalia

What happened this time?

“I ran from probation. I wanted to take drugs into the jail, gave them to too many people, three people overdosed, one died. She was my friend–$1million wrongful death lawsuit–she could’ve been saved.”

Sentence?

Seven years and three months to 20 years

How were you treated?

“It was election year–my lawyer said I wouldn’t do any better (on plea deal), had a court appointed lawyer who was buddies with the DA. I wasn’t offered any kind of drug treatment. I begged for treatment court.”

Plea Deal

Threatened with 15 years if she took it to trial.

Had PWID (Possession with Intent to Deliver) charges–had evidence on a recorded device.

How were you treated by the police?

“A couple were nice, but they lied to me–said people told him I did things…”

Contact with victim’s family?

Lawyer read apology letter in court

“She was my dealer on the outside–no hard feelings from her brother. They looked like they wanted to kill me in the courtroom.”

Do you have any outside support?

Mom is supportive, dad–died. Kids, husband.

What do you do for fun?

“I used to love to sing and dance and play with my kids. We’d laugh all the time. They’re funny (cries). AA in here is fun.”

Do you think prison is rehabilitative?

“No. Maybe long bids because they separate you from the crime. They wouldn’t let me do SDTP (State Drug Treatment Program) even though I have a drug case. They gave me no chance at all. They gave me the TC to do four months before my minimum.

I am a really good person, and I had it together at one time. I don’t feel like I was ever given a chance. I had no help. I would have done long-term rehab, but I wasn’t given that option (cries).”

TEDx Talks, “Inshitivism,” and Toni Morrison

MUNCY STATE PRISON

November 25th, 2024

Monday

My reaction to Muncy TEDx Talks:

“Your mistakes don’t have to define you” and all of that is fine on its face, but none of those women have actually been to prison. Being an ex-con DOES define you forever, and that’s just reality. In the job market, whether you can go to college or do certain professions, in custody cases, even in getting housing in the future. We in REALITY, have many less opportunities than we did before. Do you think I’M going to be appointed by the governor and living my best life if I “make good choices” in the future?
That’s just bullshit.

What nobody’s addressing is that mass incarceration in the United States is real, and the system is rigged for recidivism. What nobody is saying is that what brings most women to prison is addiction, trauma, and mental illness, and THOSE AREN’T CHOICES.

November 26th, 2024

Kaylee’s birthday

Tuesday

New word:

“Inshitivism”–a decline in business.

November 27th, 2024

Wednesday

4:16pm

We didn’t shop today, which really, REALLY sucks. Now we won’t go until Monday. I have no coffee or e-cigs.

Fuck.

Book:

The Poets and Writers Complete Guide to Being a Writer: Everything You Need to Know About Craft, Inspiration, Agents, Publishing, and the Business of Building a Sustainable Writing Career © 2020

P, 4

“Toni Morrison was acutely aware of the writer’s unique ability to make sense of the great suffering inherent in the human experience. ‘Certain kinds of trauma visited on peoples are so deep, so cruel, that unlike money, unlike vengeance, even unlike justice, or rights, or the goodwill of others, only writers can translate such trauma and turn sorrow into meaning, sharpening the moral imagination,’ the Nobel laureate said upon accepting the 2008 PEN/Borders Literary Service Award in New York City.”

TIME Magazine, Exceptional people, and Holes in Souls

MISSING NOTEBOOK #9 WOMEN’S CENTER

***********************************************************************

April 20th, 2018

Day 291

Friday

1pm

Elaine just tried on my high-heeled boots and strutted around like she was on a catwalk.

It was hilarious.

Mr. Big is trying to get us to walk four miles around the cafeteria.

No thanks.

I’ll take a Jillian Michaels DVD any day.

Grammy had an appointment in Coudersport today, and I stole a TIME magazine from 2016. Let’s see if it has anything interesting in it. Wow, in China there is a glass bottomed bridge that is 984 feet above the ground and is 1410 feet long.

Holy crap.

It can hold up to 800 people at a time.

Another interesting story talks about how virtual reality can help with chronic or acute pain.

Here’s a good quote from a book on “Emotional Agility:” When we don’t go directly to the source of what’s causing an emotion, we miss the ability to really deal with what’s causing our distress, and we lose our ability to be fully engaged with the world around us. Instead of trying to push negative emotions aside, we should accept them as a useful–though sometimes uncomfortable–part of our lives.”

Here’s something else on negative thoughts–specifically low expectations–

A study in the journal “Annals of Oncology” found that women with low expectations during hormonal therapy for breast cancer experienced twice as many side effects from the treatment as those with less negative thoughts.

Wow.

Another study found that most dogs like getting praise from their owner just as much as they liked getting food, if not more.

Now I’m reading an article on exceptional siblings, all who grew up to do amazing things. Here’s what they all had in common:

  1. Many parents of the super-siblings were born abroad.
  2. Educator parents
  3. Political engagement of parents–political activism
  4. Siblings recall frequent, intense conflict among their brothers and sisters–but little conflict between their parents.
  5. Many families have an awareness of mortality, from a severe illness to the death of a family member.
  6. Few of the siblings recall growing up with firm rules, and most said they enjoyed more freedom than their peers (and much more than 21st Century kids).

April 22nd, 2018

Sunday

Day 293

12:30pm

Weird.

Morgan Freeman is doing Mountain Dew commercials.

I’m still reading my stolen TIME magazine–I’m onto an article about transplants that don’t save lives, but increase the quality of life of the recipients, such as face, hand, and penis transplants.

Interesting.

They can even do uterus transplants!

I didn’t know that.

The poor guy who got the first double hand transplant has to live with hands that don’t work.

That’s sad.

Okay, no more TIME.

I haven’t written any of my essays. I guess I should get on that. We got another new woman on Friday. She’s got a story for everything: Raised in foster care, had her face surgically reconstructed after an abusive boyfriend beat her up, two kids she doesn’t have custody of, etc.

I have to shower before visits.

7pm

Visiting with the boys was nice. I miss Tiger terribly. I’m waiting for my sponsor now, reading my AA book:

–We reviewed our fears thoroughly.

–We trust infinite God rather than our finite selves.

–All men of faith have courage.

–We remembered always that our sex powers were God-given and therefore good, neither to be used lightly or selfishly nor to be despised and loathed.

–If we are not sorry, and our conduct continues to harm others, we are quite sure to drink.

8pm

I talked to my sponsor–mostly about my resentments against Big. She asked me if I had ever acted toward somebody the way he is acting toward me, and I reluctantly said yes.

Yes, I have.

I used to be a perfectionist who thought that I was the best at everything, especially my work. This was in my early twenties when I was head tech and personnel manager at an upper scale veterinary hospital. I made employees cry, demanded the best of them, and was relentless about rules and meetings.

This was after Ethan had died and before Kaylee was born, and my work was my life. I ate, slept, and breathed veterinary medicine, and I was goot at it, too.

But I was compassionless.

I was unempathetic.

I was mean.

Not that I meant to be, I just didn’t have enough life experience not to be. I wasn’t working through my grief either–I was hurling myself into work instead.

It was my whole life.

Much like Mr. Big, I would imagine. Recovery and work, work and recovery. He even watches the cameras here when he’s not here. No relationship, no kids, not even pets. Well, two outdoor cats, but that doesn’t really count.

Ah, well.

I guess I should feel sorry for him instead of wasting all of my time resenting him.

He’s filling a void, I guess.

I wonder what caused his black, empty hole in his soul.
