Gossip Girls and Sugar From Zuko

MUNCY STATE PRISON

January 11th, 2025

1:36pm

Bambi, Martha, and Daisy are currently gossiping about the low-quality of inmates here, and then by proxy, comparing the CO’s. “She’s disgusting” and “Who says that?” are flying around in the open air. Martha is always concerned about what I’m writing, as if I’m writing exclusively about her. Well, now I am.

SHE NEVER STOPS GOSSIPING.

It’s exhausting.

“She” this and “she” that. I can’t imagine what she says about me. And Daisy buys right into it, like she loves it. And Bambi, who is constantly talking about people being “ugly,” but never looks in a mirror.

Ugh.

January 14th, 2025

11:31am

Martha is always doing something. Right now she is meaningfully searching through her cardboard records box, stopping every few seconds to consider one of the papers or booklets in it. Bambi is gossiping with Daisy in the background about workers at the sewing factory, where they both work.

Martha has settled on a book of Christian devotionals, while Daisy snorts disdainfully, “She’s lazy. I don’t care for her.”

Behind Martha hanging on a line are a towel, underwear, a bra, and a washcloth. On her bed are books, skeins of yarn, a deck of playing cards, some red and white striped mints, and blankets folded neatly against the wall.

This is her workspace.

“She acts like a brat,” says Daisy, “She must’ve gotten a DUI.”

ON GRIEF: AN ESSAY

They say grief comes in waves, and that there’s no right or wrong way to grieve. Grief is more than sadness, it is an empty aching in your soul in a place that used to be filled. One grieves in direct proportion to the amount that one loves the being they are grieving for. A mother’s loss of a child is said to be the pinnacle, the most a person can suffer with grief. The Holy Grail, the gold standard by which every other grief is measured.

7pm

Somebody fell in the shower and hit her head and then started having seizures. They called an ambulance and the paramedics took her out of here. She looked bloody and unconscious.

January 22nd, 2025

Wednesday

I am reading “Untamed” by Glennon Doyle, who is a woman who used to write books on being a straight, Christian mother whose husband cheats on her, but now writes about a love-at-first-sight encounter at a book conference with a woman named Abby. She changed her whole life. She is very brave.

Zuko asked me the other day if I would be her “makeout buddy.” I told her I needed to think about it, so I did. I thought about how Daisy, Martha, and Bambi constantly talk about how disgusting it is that women here are kissing in the bathroom, usually while they make retching noises and mime throwing up. Then I thought about Motorcycle and monogamy and all of the “shoulds.”

The I thought about what I would do if I didn’t care what anybody thought of me, and how nice it would be to be kissed by Zuko. I thought about what I would do if I was being my bravest, truest self.

I said yes yesterday.

She hasn’t kissed me yet.

I kind of can’t wait.

On the radio:

“Baby I want something else

To get me through this

Life…”

“Selfless women make for an efficient society but not a beautiful, true, or just one.”  –Glennon Doyle

“Mercy and empathy are great threats to an unjust society.”  –Glennon Doyle

January 24th, 2025

Friday

1:28pm

I don’t think we’re going to Commissary today.
Sucks.

They’re just shopping the Unit next door right now, and usually it’s all done in the morning.

Zuko kissed me today.

I was SO nice to be kissed and touched. I can’t even describe how nice it was. I miss physical affection something fierce. I got the feeling that if we weren’t in a prison and there were no rules, we’d have kept going and had full-blown sex, the energy was so…crackling. THAT would probably be amazing. She’s so gentle and soft. The way she smiled right before she kissed me…I can’t get it out of my head. It was like she was thinking, “This is going to be good–I just know it.”

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm….it was.

I was nervous but now I’m not. I just can’t wait to do it again.

I hope we don’t get in trouble.

Ugh.
Fucking prison.

No good things allowed.

January 25th, 2025

Saturday

Stryder visited today. He stayed for three hours even though he could’ve stayed longer. They put in a new system for the vending machines and nobody knew how to use the cards, so there was nothing to eat or drink. After three hours we didn’t have anything left to talk about. I told him about Zuko and then regretted it. He said, “Why did you tell me that?” I said, “Because it’s the most exciting thing that’s happened to me in a year.”

I don’t know what to say to you, dude.

I’m never going to be your person.

End of story.

I told him to stop putting me on a pedestal and date other people.

God.

“I’ll spread my wings

And I’ll learn how to fly

I’ll do what it takes
Till I touch the sky

I’ll take a risk

Take a chance

Make a change

And breakaway…”

Monday

1:37pm

Pam read my manuscript so far and wrote down some notes for me:

“Notes for Justine

  1. It would be nice to hear about more of your childhood in the beginning, and how you grew up. If you had problems as a child, maybe depression, etc.
  2. I know it’s a rough draft, some of the parts felt disorganized, jumped around a lot (could get confusing for some)
  3. I think you should really break down your mental illness how you did in the meeting, you explained it really well to us.
  4. I loved learning more about you! You are so intelligent and brave. The story was very interesting, and I learned new things.
  5. It kept me reading the whole way through, I was up to late! LOL
  6. I really have no other suggestions, but to keep going! I’m excited to read more!

Love,

Pam

Zuko wrote me a note:

Hey 🙂

I figured it’s fair to let you know what I’m thinking over here. I really like spending time with you, both hanging out chilling and this new bonus adventure 😀. Maybe we were both in denial or oblivious, but obviously everyone else (including the fucking librarian) knew what we’re just figuring out now lol.

*shrug*

You’re really smart and funny and caring and it’s really easy to talk and joke with you. You have a very pretty smile, even with what the Amazing Adam [dentist] to you. 🙂Don’t feel any type of way about that, you’re beautiful and I love to see you smile…especially the way you smile at me when we take a break from kissing. 🙂 You’re really cute when you do that. You’re a good kisser, I very much enjoy feeling your lips on mine. And I love getting to touch you, you feel good against me and in my arms. It annoys TF out of me that this comes in like 10 second timeframes. I want a LOT more time with you, alone. I want to slowly explore all of you with my fingertips, and my mouth 🙂. You’re very sexy, but you already knew that. Thanks for letting me invade your space. After that whole Sweet Tea bad being spoken into existence, I may or may not have wished for tits.

Lmao 😂

Thank you for being concerned about everything I’d lose if we tried some shit, you’re sweet. It’s extremely tempting…and risky.

*sigh*

It’s difficult not touching you when I want to. I really wanted to hold your hands when you were shaky, but I obviously can’t do that. 😣

You aren’t very good at keeping this a secret, lol.

Hopefully the shower was loud enough that she didn’t hear you. I can smell you on my shirt…that’s not a bad thing. 🙂

I wrote Zuko back:

I loved your letter. I really like spending time with you too. Maybe I am/was in denial or oblivious, but you’ll have to forgive me, I’ve identified myself as straight for a really long time. It just didn’t occur to me that you’d be interested in me romantically at all. I guess I’m not as straight as I thought I was, because I am crazy attracted to you. I think you’re sexy as fuck and I love it when you kiss me and put your hands on me. It feels right to me, and I have to trust that. I love the way you look at me and your eyes and your smile. You’re a very good kisser, did I mention that? About you slowly exploring my body with your fingertips and mouth–well that sounds like Heaven to me.

Sexy, sexy.

Fuck.

I just don’t want it to be hurried and stressful and in a fucking prison bathroom. Plus, it could get you in a lot of trouble.

I can wait.

And if you need help with your PCRA, I would love to help! There’s a lot of love in this letter. Oh well. You are important to me, and I don’t want to ruin anything for you.

And you’re right, I’m not good at this, but I will keep doing it as long as you will tolerate me. I think about you all of the time. I will try to keep my big, fat mouth shut.

Unless you’re kissing me in it.

(Did you like that? Kissing in the mouth, lol.)

I crack myself up.

I’m looking forward to making your shirts smell like me for a while, so get used to it. And if you ever want to date someone seriously, I will totally understand. But just so you know, I am thoroughly enjoying myself right now. Who knew you could have this much fun in prison?

I didn’t.

But if it ended tomorrow, I would still cherish our friendship. I just want you to know that you’re important to me. Now I’m repeating myself, so I’m going to stop writing.

On the radio:

“Take the bottle

Shake up up…

Pour some sugar on me…”

The end of that.

Fraternizing, Drama, and Humanity

May 9th, 2018

Wednesday

Day 310

1pm

Nothing bad has happened so far. I wonder if it will. Drug and Alcohol lady is here. She always seems uncomfortable, not matter what she is talking about, with nervous laughter between every sentence.

Seven Qualities to look for in a sponsor

  1. They are happily sober
  2. They are not sexually attractive
  3. They listen more than they talk
  4. They display a positive attitude
  5. You met them at a meeting
  6. They have enough time
  7. You don’t dread contacting them

Uh oh. This has turned into a nasty bitch session.

Gawd.

Does this lady have anything for us to actually do?

Omg.

Now Jo stomped out of the room and is yelling at the staff.

Cool.

All the lady said was, “Well, that didn’t go as planned.”

This whole day has been a shit show bitchfest. This lady is so unprofessional. She’s getting involved in the arguments that went on here this morning about people tattling on each other and coffee getting dumped out and other petty shit like that.

What the fuck.

I guess we’re not going to a meeting tonight either. Funny how they take AWAY our recovery when we get in trouble.

We’re all being punished because of Tori and Harley “fraternizing?” Omg this lady is pissing me off. This hour can’t go fast enough. I’m going to start reading my Living Clean book. Now we’re talking about Mr. Big making the rules up as he goes along. We’re literally doing nothing. I need a damn nap. I have a headache because of this new antiviral med for Hep C.

We almost got smoking taken away from us this morning because Big took away some of the resident’s first break because they didn’t get up on time today, and they decided to throw a bitch-fest about it.

Smart move.

So then Big says that if we’re not grateful for smoking, he’ll just take it away altogether.

Omg. (eye roll)

This lady just called the staff here unprofessional.

Sheezus.

Now she’s saying she’s going to call someone about the grievance procedure here. She’s in way over her head. Now we’re talking about people not following the dress code–WHAT?! Jo still hasn’t come back. Now Drug Lady wants to know how the phone calls and internet access goes here. What’s her deal? Now they’re bitching about the food here–UM–compared to jail food, this place is the Taj Mahal! I can’t believe Drug Lady gets paid for the residents to bitch at her about how bad it sucks here. Jolene is complaining that when the staff found dope in her clothes and shit she brought in that she got written up for contraband.

Um……………..what did she expect to happen??

Now we’re bitching that Kat made a face at Jo when Jo was being a bitch, and Big’s response was, “Oh, did she hurt your feelings?”

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand now we’re back to fraternizing.

Sorry–but if I have to suffer through it, so do you. When got a new woman in and guess who it is? Fuking Ike’s ex-Sugar Momma. GREAT. Then she’s spouting garbage about how, “If me and Justine had met under different circumstances [fucking the same dude], who would have been homies.”

Oh yeah?

I beg to differ, lady, but whatever.

So this lady hands out one one page paper and that’s it. We are now officially counselled about drugs and alcohol.

“I’m upset FOR you guys! That’s understandably upsettable!” she says. People keep suggesting to Jo that she should ask me for help with rewriting an essay that Big won’t accept on “Personal Responsibility.” Maybe we’ll work on that instead of listening to this bullshit.

Personal Responsibility

–what personal responsibility means to me

–what accountability means to me

–how can I be personally responsible for my actions

–admitting wrongs

–making amends

–fixing the situation

–wrap it up (conclusion)

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand we’re still talking about nothing.

3pm

That shit lasted for TWO hours!

Okay, onto my Living Clean book: “Making peace with loss is one way we learn acceptance.”

“Learning about acceptance, love, and compassion helps us to accept ourselves without conditions.”

9pm

The meeting was good. I ate too much candy. I wore my high-heeled boots and we walked, so my feet are sore.

Worth it.

Jolene is so funny–on the way back I overheard her talking about me wearing heels everywhere and she said, “Ha! She probably walks funny in sneakers!”

Funny.

In other shocking news–freaking Tori slept with Bill at work! In a car! I can’t believe it! Here she is drooling over Harley at every meeting, so much that it got her in trouble, and then she goes and sleeps with some other guy! Who’s not even good looking!

I really think her bipolar meds need adjusting. Sugar Momma seems to be adjusting well. She’s here not because of drugs, but because she cussed out a Zito Media representative on the phone and made terroristic threats toward her!

Omg!

Talk about multiple personalities–she calls her alter-ego gangster personality Harley and swears she can’t control it…or her…or whatever.

9:30pm

I tried to call Elizabeth, my twin sister, and she didn’t answer, so I called her ex-husband, Stryder and he told me that she’s back to her regular self. I wonder what she’ll think of my letter. I guess she has her son back with her now too and she’s being really mean to everybody again. I talked to my mother after that, and she said that my boys were doing fine and that she hadn’t talked to Elizabeth.

I still can’t believe Tori slept with Bill.

Yuck.

And WHY?

I still have a headache–time for sleep.

Peace out.

Thursday

Day 311

6:30am

I am not loving this new medication–Mavret–it gives me headaches and makes me even more tired. Let’s see what pearls of wisdom Our Daily Bread has today:

“Love your enemies.”  –Matthew 5:44

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.”  –Matthew 5:3

Paul believed that in the hard times, God is at work, “achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.”  –vv. 17-18

8am

Drama drama drama. I guess Sandra is starting drama–she woke Jolene up at 6am in a not-very-nice way, and Jolene was pissed. I do believe that Sandra had good intentions and that she wanted to wake her up early so that she didn’t miss first cigarette break, but she does seem like she’s overstepping boundaries a bit. I guess we’ll address it in Community this morning. No Mr. Big today–I guess he had an appointment. Then Sandra wouldn’t even eat at the breakfast table this morning and she cried when she told me about it. We’ll see what happens. Now Sandra is refusing to join the Community circle.

Hm.

“To wait for someone else, or to expect someone else to make my life richer, or fuller, or more satisfying, puts me in a state of constant suspension; and I miss all those moments that pass. They never come back to be experienced again. –Kathleen Tierney Crilly

“A loving God replaces those defects with quality attributes.”

Philanthropy–a person with a love of humankind

Hope–a change in direction

“The world will not be saved by the internet. The world will be saved by the human spirit.”

Human spirit: the elevation above ourselves

We should be morally committed to be the healer of the world.

“Where there is love of humankind, there is love of healing.”  –Hippocrates 2400 years ago

12pm

Went to do Community Service at the Community Building–I got some good new clothes! Thanks, Big, for approving my request! My feet are killing me. I get to miss Nutrition Class today because I have a dentist appointment. Yay for real–I hate the teacher of the Nutrition Class–she’s imperious and rude. Big did not come in today.

Shocker.

At Community this morning, I made a little speech about giving people the benefit of the doubt, and being kind to one another because we all have to live together and the tension level has been unacceptable around here lately.

I hope it sinks in.

2pm

I’m riding back from the dentist with the funniest guy I’ve met since John died. Clever, I’ll name him–he’s hilarious! He’s always got a smart crack that makes me laugh. I guess his son’s a body builder. He used to be a maitre’d at a Playboy Club! He started dating a bunny and it ruined his marriage. What a story!

3pm

Back at the Center. I stole a Reader’s Digest–let’s see what it has to say:

“I just want to be as happy as a character in the first half hour of a horror movie.” –Twitter

“You can start having an impact on your immediate environment. Be kind, listen, have goodwill. It has a ripple effect. I’ll start there.”  –Gal Gadot

“What money does is magnify you…Money gives you a chance if you’re a slob to be a big slob. On the other hand, if you’re inclined toward doing good things, it gives you the power to do a great many things.”  –Warren Buffet

Ha! There’s a picture of two cats, one with a sign behind him that says, “I eat the plants and throw them up.” The sign in front of the second cat says, “I eat the throwup.”

Oh gross–the next article is about cooking things in the microwave, and one of the foods is a live lobster!!

Ugh.

What an awful way to die. Boiled from the inside out.

We’re sitting around watching an old movie called, “Clean and Sober” for group. Sandra’s company line for everything is, “Why do I have to do this? I’m not an addict!”

Annoying.

Wow–four drug-free ways to ease arthritis–grass-fed meat, going gluten-free, capsaicin applied topically, and probiotics.

Hm.

Controlled sleep deprivation can be used to treat depression.

Huh. Sounds awful.

Here’s a funny one: Sign outside of a British pub: “Do not drop your cigarette ends on the floor, as they burn the hands and knees of customers as they leave.”

10pm

The meeting was good. Mr. Big wasn’t there–I guess he had some dental work done today. Nikolai was there, though, with a new guy who looked High and said that he was from Elmira. I’m worried about her. Apparently something bad happened between her and Sugar Daddy, because she’s going to be staying at the Center again for a few days with her baby, Temperance, until she can get a place of her own in Roulette.

Back to my Reader’s Digest–there is an article in here about acquired savant–people being able to do extraordinary things after a traumatic brain injury.

Huh.

Who’da thunk?

Forgiveness, NA, and Trouble

WOMEN’S CENTER

May 7th, 2018

Day 308

Monday

11am

Got therapized. I talked about forgiveness–forgiving my sister and mother, forgiving everyone else too. I don’t want to become a bitter old hag like my mother. I think maybe I already am a bitter old hag, when I look at my 4th step, which is writing down all of my resentments. I don’t want to have an unforgiving spirit. The book I read on forgiveness says that you should put a chair opposite you, and imagine the person you want to forgive in it, and tell them what they did wrong to you and then forgive them out loud. I wonder if that works. I’ll have to try it.

The trees are all turning green again–it’s beautiful. I wish I didn’t have to stay in the Center until July. It sucks so bad.

I have Christian Radio Driver again today–he says pray for good things for the people I resent after I’ve forgiven them.

2pm

Crossroads–(on board)

“Self love is a compass that helps you navigate difficult moments in various situations. When you sharpen your idea of self, clarity is a gift, the armor is self-worth, your weapon is RESPECT.

4pm

In therapy we talked about the willingness to forgive my mother, which will be the hardest to do. In the van Tori and I talked about our dead babies–hers was named Brayden Michael, and she lost him at six months pregnant. There are dead porcupines all over the road today.

Tragic.

Also tragic–she didn’t even get to bury him, her baby. They just made her deliver him and then took him away, to be discarded as medical waste.
Poor girl.

Then she didn’t get out of bed for five months in her grief, and when she got pregnant with Lilly, she didn’t get prenatal care until the baby was almost born because she was sure she was going to die too.

We just passed a sign that said, “Rejoice! Jesus lives.” I guess he loves in each of us, if we believe. I believe. I prayed today for the willingness to let go of my resentments and forgive those that I carry hatred in my heart for.

The radio just told a little story:

A man was talking to a congregation of ducks that were walking along. He said, “You have been given wings! You can soar high above the ground like eagles! Use your wings and FLY!” And the congregation of ducks said, “Ahem!” and then they waddled off. Then the narrator says: You have been given gifts like intelligence, feelings, and strength! Don’t walk–FLY! Live an extraordinary life, not an ordinary one!”

Good story.

I’ll do my best.

My therapist gave me a copy of “Living Clean.” I can’t wait to read it. But first I have to wrap up with my forgiveness book. Here goes–first the discussion about “The Unforgivable Sin:”

“Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. And whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whosoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him either in this age, or in the age to come.”  –Matthew 12:31-32

The term blasphemy may be defined “defiant irreverence.” We would apply the term to such sins as cursing God or willfully degrading the things considered holy. In this passage the term refers to the declaration of the Pharisees who had witnessed undeniable evidence that our Lord was performing miracles in the power of the Holy Spirit. Yet they attributed the miracles to Satan. In the face of irrefutable evidence they ascribed the work of the Holy Spirit to that of Satan.”

Then it says:

“I agree with a host of biblical scholars that this unique circumstance cannot be duplicated today. The Pharisees had seen proof after proof that Christ was who He claimed to be. They could not escape the fact that what He was doing was supernatural in nature. But instead of acknowledging what I believe they knew in their hearts was true, they attributed the supernatural power to that of Satan instead of the Holy Spirit. That, in a sense, was the last straw.”

Tori says that she feels like we’ve lived our whole lives here.

10:30pm

Today was just amazing. I talked all day in therapy about forgiveness, and then when I got back to the Center Grammy was crying and when I asked her what was wrong she said, “Nobody wants me here.” I assured her that everyone wanted and loved her and hugged on her for a long time. Then we sat side by side and watched Hallmark together, even though I’m not allowed. When Kat came in for work, I told her that Grammy had had a bad day, and when Kat asked her what was the matter she said that she was scared to get into the ban this morning, as there was a new driver. That was all we could get out of her, but I knew she felt better when Kat hugged her. I actually got a hug from Kat tonight too, when, after we talked about her wonderful three-year old grandchild, we started talking about my day and my mother and eventually we ended up on the topic of losing babies. It turns out that Kat’s best best friend, who is Godmother to her children, lost a precious little girl named Erin when she was just 18 months old. Kat teared up when she agreed with me that it’s just not something that you “get over.” I told her that she was so so good to have been that that bereaved mother could call to just be there with her when she couldn’t do it alone anymore. People never cease to surprise me with their goodness and kindness and compassion for others. It’s what makes the difference between a well-lived life and a wasted life not lived, I think–how good one is to others. I have to shut off my light before I get into trouble.

May 8th, 2018

Day 309

Tuesday

12am

Can’t sleep, and of course, I am not allowed to turn my light on, so I am writing in the dark, which is very difficult.

Anyway, this “fraternizing” bullshit is really bugging me. The reason it’s really bugging me is that Nick flat out told me that he wanted me tonight (or last night, whatever) at the meeting, and I actually HAD the opportunity to “fraternize” with him and didn’t take it. Big is always saying, “Don’t give up what you really want for what you want right now,” and that’s what was running through my head as I looked at Nick’s hot, hot body and fantasized about how good it would feel to be touched…ugh.

I’m doing it again.

Enough of that.

Anyway, I want Big to know that it WASN’T me, and I’m not sure how to tell him without throwing Tori under the bus, but I’m going to tell him. It bothers me that he assumed it was me. I guess I know what he thinks of me in that department.

Great.

Anyway, I got a letter in the mail today from Human Services that told me that I am required to apply for Disability AGAIN.

So.

I called the 800 number they gave me, waited on hold for 40 minutes, then talked with a representative for another 25 minutes only to find out that my “local” (an hour away) SSI Office “does not have any available appointments and to call back next week,” please and thank you very much. THAT was another wasted hour of my life spent attempting to apply for disability. I wonder if Big will let me do it online. I’ll have to find that out tomorrow too.

I have this old song in my head–it goes:

“Hold on for one more day

Break free from the pain

Hold on for one more day…”

I sent her that letter I wrote today–my therapist at Crossroads was nice enough to look up the address of her husband’s law firm–I hope he gets it to her. I am going to try to call her tomorrow, and then call her tomorrow, and then call my mother to see what she can do.

One Sunday when I asked about Elizabeth, I was sort of shocked when my mother told me that she hadn’t talked to her since December and then admitted that she, “just didn’t know what to do.” I didn’t have any answers for her either. I wonder if she’ll even talk to me tomorrow.

We’ll see.

I wish I could read in this light. I borrowed a book from my Crossroads counsellor called, “Living Clean.” It’s supposed to be pretty good. He also talked about me making my blog a podcast, which I have no idea how to do, but sounds pretty cool.

I prayed a lot yesterday.

I prayed for the willingness to let go of my resentments, I prayed for my mother and father and even Mr. Big was in there somewhere. I guess I’ll try to sleep again. I do so hope that this Harley and Tori thing works out for her. I want good things for her.

2am

Still can’t sleep. I’m going to sit by my door and read this new book, “Living Clean.” We’ll see how much trouble I get in.

“Our gratitude for our new way of life motivates us to keep giving more, living more, and loving more.”

“Revovery is a full-contact, lifelong process.”

“We have learned that we really can survive anything and stay clean.”

“In the beginning of our recovery, and our first experiences of joy are like seeing color for the first time.”

“Perhaps more importantly, our connections with people became intensely important and satisfying to us.”

“We can measure our lives not in years or by the things we gain or lose, but by the degree to which we make peace with our own lives and the world around us.”

“We walk through fear and wake up to the miracles that surround us.”

“Time is not the same as experience.”

“The difference between humility and humiliation can be the level of acceptance about the information that we get.”

“Practicing honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness keeps us teachable, grateful, and humble.”

“No matter how long we have been clean, we can go to meetings and listen for the music. ‘It’s like when your ears pop,’ a member shared. ‘Suddenly I could hear what I didn’t know was missing before.”’

“Our hope is that the next member will do better than we did, that they can learn from our mistakes.”

“Wisdom is building on past experiences to cope with new events.”

“Through hard work and grace, if we keep coming back, we do get free.”

“Recovery gives us a new chance at life. Sometimes we have to accept that invitation more than once.”

Then the residential worker that’s on, Yvette, just stopped and chatted with me for a while–turns out she was in a bad marriage for almost 25 years before she left her husband.

W.O.W.

That’s a freaking lifetime to be miserable. She said she stayed for the kids. Huh. She says her ex bad-mouths her to the kids just like Dubya does with Tiger.

That’s just awful.

Bad for everybody.

Yvette surprises me sometimes when she opens up–she’s got a really hard exterior, but inside, I think she’s pretty okay. My butt hurts from sitting on this floor, even though I put three blankets down, so I’m going to try to sleep again.

*sigh*

5:30am

No luck sleeping.

It seems like either I’m sleeping all of the time or I can’t sleep at all.

“Spiritual growth can be bewildering, frightening, and very lonely.”

“Selfishness and self-centeredness die hard.”

“The only way out is through. We must roll up our sleeves and get to work.”

“There is hope. When we listen to others share their pain and how they get through it, we get a broader view.”

“When we change our attitude or perspective, we can find a new sense of compassion and gratitude. Perhaps the most valuable lesson of all is empathy.”

“There is great satisfaction in being able not to just look back, but to reach back and help someone across.’

8am

God–now all immigrants and asylum seekers will be prosecuted by the United States.

8am

Omg. Big just told Tori that she can’t go to outside meetings until further notice–she’s crying and crying.

Banned from meetings–sheez.

New TED Talk:

In the military, people are given medals to sacrifice so that others may gain–in business it’s the opposite.

Why did you do it? (asking a hero) –all had the same answer:

“Because they would have done it for me.”

The leader sets the tone.

Leadership is a choice, not a rank.

9am

Off to get my urinalysis and go shopping with the rest of the women–Jo, Jolene, Loreen, Brenda, and….I forgot her name already–heavyset blonde who runs her mouth a lot. Everybody’s new, it seems. I asked Brenda why she was at the Center, and all she said was “mental.” When I pressed her further, all she said was that she loved it there, she had nowhere to go, and that she’d be there for six months. She made it sound voluntary–sheesh.

I wish I was so lucky.

Two months, two months, two months.

I can do it.

Jolene is talking about having “sometimers”–she remembers things sometimes and sometimes not. A rap song called “God’s Plan” is on the radio. I don’t really understand the song. Or God’s Plan.

I can’t believe Tori’s not allowed to go to meetings. That’s awful. Purple is Jolene’s favorite color is purple.

12pm

We went shopping–that was fun. NOT. Well we did dance up and down the aisles when a Paula Abdul song came on. Jolene just said, “She’s not serious–she’s just playing with your peter, don’t get hard.”

Ha!

I saw Toad while I was at the hospital getting blood work and a urine culture. He seemed not to be doing well. I wonder if he picked up drinking again–his eyes were all bloodshot and he didn’t smell too good. I guess I’ll find out when I get out how he is. Toad is about three and a half feet tall, fully grown, and walks with canes. He was just born with everything wrong with him. After many, many surgeries, he can walk with assistance, but his arms and legs seem to fly everywhere when he is. He’s been my friend since high school, but has gained about 150lbs since then, so he has a tough time getting around now. I hope he’s okay.

I stole a Teen Vogue while I was at the lab that said on the cover: “The long way will become a theme in your life, but a journey you’ll learn to love.”  –Solange

The title of the cover said, “The Sound of Music Hope PROTEST Healing Style. It seems our teens have more interesting things to read than our adults–let’s see what it says (the song on the radio is about not giving up): uh oh–Jolene–(who says us women “check out” in her book) has to poop really bad] ok back to Teen Vogue: “Music connects us to our shared passions, hurts, cares, and dreams.” –Bozomo Saint John (Queen Bee over at Apple Music)

On the radio: “What would you do if your son was at home, crying on the floor because he’s hungry?” Then something about sleeping with a man for a little bit of money–for you this is just a good time, but this is what I call life.”

Sad.

6pm

Webinar on opioids:

Opiate–any drug that’s derived from the opium plant–morphine, codeine, heroin

Opioid–made stronger in lab–hydromorphone, buprenorphine

Five days is the tipping point of a person becoming dependent on opioids.

116 people died every day in the U.S. in 2016 from overdoses

117,000 started using heroin in 2016

More people are dying from opioid overdoses than car crashes (!!)

–rural places have an increased death rate per capita

–Neurotransmitter called dopamine–reward pathway is the same as food and sex, which makes it very difficult to treat

Welp, we got kicked off the webinar. Mr. Big just got a phone call and then kind of slammed his door shut. Maybe it wasn’t intentional. I always think the worst.

Back to my Teen Vogue:

Norwegian singer Sigrid said, “Songs have the power to connect people. It’s never been more important to be tolerant.”

NYC DJ Callie Reiff says, “Music turns down the noise of the world and causes you to feel, love, and breathe.”

Maggie Rogers says, “I feel like my job is to be a fulcrum for energy–to take in everything from the crowd, filter it through my work, and then reflect all that same energy and goodness back on them. There’s so much power in completely committing to be your full, weird self.”

Nice!

This one is my favorite so far, from Kalie Shorr of Maine who is part of an all-female singer–songwriter community called Song Suffragettes, “I want to change how women treat each other. We are wild, multidimensional creatures–why does society say we have to be in competition?”

Jay-Som–”I fit many boxes of marginalized groups who don’t have the opportunity to have their stories heard. There needs to be more women, people of color, LGBTQ, and more in the music industry.”

Destiny Frasqueri, aka Princess Nokia, has lectured at Harvard University about her views on urban feminism, champions in her lyrics body positivity, universal acceptance, and honoring your ethnicity. “Music has empowered me through poverty, abuse, and mental health issues.”

2:30pm

Time for parenting classes. Praise = Positive Reinforcement

2:30pm

Oh God, something bad is happening. This is it. I’m going to prison. I’m bad, and I’m going to be bad forever. I just….I just thought that if I could stick it out for another couple of months…got my hopes up again…for nothing…for nothing. I thought I would turn over a new leaf with this forgiveness thing…I just…it just made my days the tiniest bit easier…all for naught.

It was a setup.
I should’ve known.

Great.

Another year.

Another year…another year.

Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaantastic.

Right when I tell Tiger that I’ll be home in a couple months. Another fucking year. I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this. Tori and I…we’re in for it.

I’m afraid.

Ah, well, that’s life.

That’s my life in particular. Just when you see the faintest glimmer of hope…everything comes crashing down. I can’t believe that I trusted them. Fucking people. It’s not even an addictive drug.

Ah, well.

We’ll see how long it takes for the police to show up. Maybe I’ll quit smoking this time too, then. We’ll see. This parenting lady is pretty nice. I bet she is a good mother. Not like me. I’m so selfish. I’m the worst. I got close this time, though. Not close enough. God. I was so looking forward to getting the fuck out of here. Oh God. I wish they would just get it over with so I could get on with it then. I feel like I did when I was waiting for Kaylee to die–hurry up and just wait for the awful thing to happen.

Just do it already.

Pull the trigger.

7pm

In house NA group–Tori’s sponsor is getting the DL on the shenanigans going on here today. Tomorrow’s going to be fun. God, I hope this one blows over. I don’t think it’s going to, though.

Step Six:

“We’re entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.”

“This is the step that separates the men from the boys.”

My most glaring character defects:

Self-pity

Lying

Anger

Selfishness

Tori: “I’m a fucking dandelion. I’m not some pretty flower that withers and dies when you look at it, I just come back harder when you cut me down.

My Creator, I am now

Willing that You should

Have all of me, good

And bad.

I pray that you

Now remove from

Me every single defect

Of character which

Stands in the way of

My usefulness to you

And my fellows.

Grant me strength, as

I go out from here to

Do your bidding.

AMEN

8:30pm

Almost time for bed, thank the Lord. This day has been completely and totally exhausting. I don’t really want to wake up tomorrow. Isn’t that awful? I’m so sick of bad things happening that I just want to be dead already. This life over. Start again please. Sick of it, all of the punishments this life has for me. It never seems to be enough to please the powers that be.

Kat is sewing a hole in a shirt for me, and Grammy, Elaine, Brenda, and I are hanging out watching The Voice (well, I’m not allowed to watch it, so I’m writing). It’s almost kind of nice, except for the looming sense of dread that I have about what happened today. Jo is the snitch this time. Jolene just showed me a beautiful word and picture collage that she made in rehab that represents a year in her life. I’m glad she showed me. She’s proud of it. Elaine made me a glow-in-the-dark “best friends” bracelet, because my last one fell off somewhere, and a little sign that I put in my window that says, “Live, Love.” I guess she ran out of room for the “Laugh.” These people have become my family in the last year. When Grammy got back to the Center from PRIDE today, she chirped, “I feel much better today!” I was glad. I wonder what will happen tomorrow. I guess all I can do is wait and see.

Kat, Georgia, and Jolene are discussing now what it was like for them when someone close to them died. The profundity and depth of the conversations we have here continue to amaze me. Grammy just told me to sing along with her to a song. She likes to sing.

Tori’s new clothes from her new boyfriend Harley are fancy labels like Vera Wang and Jennifer Lopez. I’m a little ashamed to say that I am jealous. Of course the only man in the running won The Voice.

On an Our Daily Bread:

“The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.” –Nahum 1:7

On my birthday, June 10th, it says:

Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.” –1 Peter 4:9

Jeopardy, Prison Stuff, and MLK

MUNCY STATE PRISON

January 2nd, 2025

Thursday

7:09pm

I have a big zit in the middle of my forehead.

My feelings are hurt.

Zuko and I were supposed to play Jeopardy tonight, and Martha was going to be the host, but Martha didn’t want to sit at a certain table. Zuko wanted to sit at a table where her girlfriend couldn’t see her across the Unit, so she decided not to play at all.

Like–what?

You can only play some stupid, harmless game with me if you’re hiding?

That doesn’t even make any sense!

Plus it makes me feel worthless!

Then she wants to talk to me later like nothing’s wrong.

Fuck that.

I don’t even play games like that in my romantic relationships, much less platonic ones.

What the fuck?

Maybe Daisy is right, and I’m just a pawn in this stupid game they seem to think is a relationship.

Book:

“Gates of Injustice” by Alan Elsner © 2006

P. 158

“The problem with the ‘worst of the worst’ argument is that experience has shown that it just isn’t true. A better slogan would have been, ‘Build it and they will come.’ Once a state built a supermax, it was under enormous political pressure to fill it. After spending tens of millions of dollars to erect these costly penal palaces, governors were not anxious to have them standing half-empty. In state after state, it became abundantly clear that a high proportion of supermax inmates were severely mentally ill.

They were not so much the ‘worst of the worst’ as the ‘sickest of the sick.’ Wardens of other prisons were all too happy to get rid of them because they were disruptive and difficult to control.

Supermax wardens took them to fill as many beds as possible.”

P. 166

“Psychiatrist Terry Kupers has also studied SHU syndrome. He said even those inmates who did not become completely psychotic manifested a number of psychosis-like symptoms, including massive anxiety, hyper-responiveness to external stimuli, perception distortions and hallucinations, acute confusion, difficulties with concentration and memory and others. Kupers made the point that most supermax prisoners would eventually be released to the community on completing their sentences. They would emerge from years of total isolation mentally destroyed and full of rage.”

P. 175

“In Oklahoma, where death row is underground so there is no natural light, a death sentence means never seeing the sun again, which perhaps explains why one in three inmates give up their appeals and ask to be put to death quickly. This phenomenon, known as volunteerism, is growing throughout the country.

From 1995 through 2001, at least 61 of the 409 people put to death in the United States were ‘volunteers.’ Some were clearly mentally incompetent; others were deeply depressed.

‘With inadequate medical and psychiatric attention, I have seen rapid deterioration and personality changes in these men, which is what is leading to volunteerism,’ said Texas defense lawyer Yolanda Torres.”

P. 188

“Jails have a much more complex and varied mission than prisons. The key point is that for a great number of people, jails are not supposed to be places of punishment. They are holding facilities. According to the Department of Justice, jails have ten distinct tasks:

  1. To receive individuals pending arraignment and hold them awaiting trial, conviction or sentencing.
  2. To readmit probation, parole, and bail bond violators and absconders.
  3. To temporarily detain minors pending transfer to juvenile authorities.
  4. To hold mentally ill people until they can be transferred to appropriate health facilities.
  5. To hold individuals for the military for protective custody, for contempt and for the courts as witnesses.
  6. To release convicted inmates to the community upon completion of a sentence.
  7. To transfer inmates to federal, state or other authorities.
  8. To house inmates for state or other authorities when prisons are overcrowded.
  9. To sometimes operate community-based programs as alternatives to incarceration.
  10. To hold inmates sentenced to short terms, generally of one year or less.”

P. 191

“The most prestigious units in many jail systems are the special squads that many sheriffs deploy, called CERT or SERT teams (Corrections or Sheriff’s Emergency Response Teams). Dressed in paramilitary black uniforms or camouflage fatigues and armed to the teeth with the latest supposedly nonlethal weapons, members of these teams are a carefully selected elite. They undergo elaborate weapons and physical training and stand ready around the clock in many facilities to quell not only riots, but any form of inmate unrest or disobedience.

Each year, the best get to strut their stuff and compete against one another at industry fairs, such as the Mock Prison Riot sponsored by the federal National Institute of Justice’s Office of Law Enforcement Technology Commercialization, which is held in a disused prison in Wheeling, West Virginia.”

P. 204

“One reason the city [of Buckeye, Arizona] was so anxious to expand its limits was that the U.S. Census Bureau counts inmates as if they were citizens of the towns and counties where they are incarcerated rather than of where they actually come from. More residents means more federal aid and grants. Buckeye stood to gain subsidies of $600 per inmate per year from the 2000 census. When this effect was multiplied across America, the result was to drain a significant amount of money away from inner cities, where most prisoners originate, to white, rural areas where most prisons are sited.

‘The near-doubling of the prison population since the last census and a rural prison boom during the 1990s portends a substantial transfer of economic and political power from urban to rural America,’ wrote criminologist Tracy Huling. ‘The prisoner “share” of the nearly $2 trillion in federal funds tied to population counts distributed nationwide over the next decade will go to the mostly rural hometowns of their keepers.’”

P. 204

“Moreover, since prisoners earn little or no money, they also artificially drive down average income rates, making towns and counties eligible for federal housing funds. Census figures are also used to redraw political boundaries. Even though most prisoners cannot vote, their presence helps boost the political clout of rural districts, most of which are staunchly conservative.”

Book:

“Gates of Injustice” by Alan Elsner © 2006 excerpts:

P. 206

“Whether or not local communities reap the full benefit, there is no doubt that there is big money to be made in prisons. As recently as 1980, there were no private companies operating U.S. prisons and jails for profit. The change began in 1984 when Hamilton County, Tennessee, awarded a contract to Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) to run a jail. That year, the federal Immigration and Naturalization Service also turned to CCA to run a lockup in Houston. In 1985, Kentucky became the first state to hire a company to run a prison. Privatization picked up steam in 1987 when Texas awarded two 500-bed facilities to CCA and another two to Wackenhut Corrections Corporation, the other leader in the field.”

“True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. It is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.”

–Martin Luther King, Jr.

P. 222

“What we see here is the emergence of a permanent criminal class. Prisoners are told to reform, but they are given few tools to do so. Once they are entangled in the prison system, many belong to it for life. They may spend stretches of time inside prison and periods outside, but they are never truly free. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy commented, ‘A decent and free society, founded in respect for an individual, ought not to run a system with a sign at the entrance for inmates saying, “Abandon Hope, All Ye Who Enter Here.’”

P. 223

“In Los Angeles, thousands of parolees congregate in a 50-block area of downtown known as Skid Row, the largest concentration of homelessness in the United States. The unwary visitor who stumbles on this part of the city might be excused for thinking he had suddenly been transported to Bangladesh. Thousands of people live in makeshift tents or cardboard boxes on the streets or crowd into cheap hotels or flophouses. Prostitutes ply their trade, looking for enough money for their next fix. People urinate and defecate in public; flies swarm over foul-smelling streets. Los Angeles County makes little effort to deal with its homeless population, which may reach as high as 100,000 on any given night. The county offers only 14,000 beds in homeless shelters.”

“Remember those who are in prison as if you were in prison with them.” –Hebrews 3:13”

Forgiveness, Cougars, and Gangbangers?

WOMEN’S CENTER

May 3rd, 2018

Thursday

Day 304

2pm

The new woman, Sandra, isn’t doing so hot. She threw up this morning and now has a migraine that won’t go away. It’s about 80 degrees out today. It’s hard to believe it was snowing two weeks ago. I have a kidney infection brewing, I just know it. I told Big, but my doctor wants lab work, and we’re not going to Coudersport again until Tuesday. I’m so pissed. I just need a fucking antibiotic!

Ugh.

In any case, I guess I’ll read this Forgiveness book:

  1. Sin creates a deficit in God’s economy because whenever there is sin, something is taken or demanded from the sinner. Historically, whenever human beings sin against God, He provides a channel through which fellowship can be established and maintained.

Atonement means “to cover.”

More than retribution, God wants to fellowship with us.

A major hindrance to the ability to experience God’s forgiveness is the unwillingness to accept God’s frame of reference concerning sin and the individual’s inability to do anything about it.

“Through His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins.”  –Acts 10:43

10:30pm

I’m supposed to be sleeping, but I can’t. The air is warm and wet, and all I can hear are the peepers outside peeping to each other. It’s nights like this that I would stay up and write because there’s just the right amount of solitude and inspiration in the air. But alas, I cannot, and will be forced to turn my light out soon.

At the meeting tonight I talked about pain. The pain in my body because of the damp weather and the pain in my heart for my drunk sister. Tori talks of how she is afraid to leave and I can’t wait to be anywhere but here. Nikolai may be getting an apartment in Roulette, by the sounds of it. Tori has been refusing to consider Roulette as an option because we have no vehicle and there is nothing but a post office and a small convenience store. I hate Roulette, but I would love to be close to Tiger. I’d give anything for her to be able to walk to my house if she wanted to.

Maybe I’ll talk more to Tori about it.

I guess I’ll try to sleep rather than wait for the staff to yell at me about my light.

11:30pm

Can’t sleep.

These visions of sexcapades past keep dancing through my head. I think it’s because it’s one of those nights that would be fantastic to stay up all night making love.

So quiet and peaceful.

The air is thick with humidity, but it’s cool enough that it’s not sticky.

Just the right temperature to roll around with somebody special and play and have fun.

Which makes me think of Tori. Not having sex with her, but the fact that the sexual harassment at work is such that she’s allowing people to touch her now inappropriately and acts as if she is a small child and is powerless to stop it. It makes me mad on some level that she won’t stand up for herself; but sad too, because she was horribly sexually abused as a child. Her bipolar disorder is manifesting itself more severely than normal now too, I think because she actually feels on some level as if she IS a child.

She says she never grew up.

I told her that now is the time.

She refuses to assert herself, always with a smile on her face, no matter what she actually feels inside.

One man at work in particular, Bill, is exploiting her niceness and it makes me boil inside.

My hand hurts too much to keep writing.

More later, probably.

12:30am

Still can’t sleep. I got up to pee, and while walking back to my room, through the glass doors I saw a deer glide silently across the parking lot, ever reminding me that she is free, and I sit in a cage.

While I was lying awake I was aspiring to the future and dreaming a dream. Here’s my dream: I’d like to (with my millions of dollars) buy that giant Adelphia building in the middle of Coudersport and turn it into a Vet Tech School with a free emergency animal hospital in it.

Wouldn’t that be amazing?

It would revitalize Coudersport, as well as help the community and the animals in it. As it stands, there is one tiny vet clinic in Coudersport that does not take emergencies.

I wonder what the PCAAP (Potter County Animal Assistance Project) people would think of this idea…they’re sitting on a couple million dollars…hmmmmm.

They pay to spay and neuter stray animals and the animals of people who cannot afford to have their animals spayed and neutered (like me).

I miss my cats.

I have a feeling that my rat is dead.

He had two cancerous lumps when I left a year ago.

Poor thing.

I have to get Kidowed published somehow. I can’t wait to get the fuck out of here.

The End.

Try to sleep again.

I’m surprised they haven’t yelled at me yet.

May 4th, 2018

Day 305

Friday

6am

I slept like shit last night. Woke up about a hundred times. I’m in some pain today–my hands are hurting. I guess I’ll read my forgiveness book.

12pm

Great.

I have no idea what I did but Big says he’s “disappointed” in me. Just said that and walked away.

Jesus Christ what the fuck did I do NOW???!!!!

He’s so judgmental I can’t stand it. Way to fuck up my day.

Well, I found out.

Big’s mad at me because I apparently was “fraternizing” with Nick, a guy I know that showed up at the meeting last night. I gave the kid a hug, for God’s sake.

Fuck.

I can’t win.

Nick was at the meeting because he brought Harley, who is in love with Tori, who actually IS fraternizing with him. I also hugged three other guys last night, but he doesn’t seem to care about that!

Fuck!

Then he called me a cougar, which is funny, because Nick is 15 years younger than me.

What the fuck.

I can’t win with this guy.

It’s NA!!

WE HUG!!

There’s something I’m missing to this, because I’ve been hugging guys in front of Big for months, and he never cared before Nick.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…………..I know Nick has the reputation of being a playboy, but please.

5:30pm

We got another new lady–Brenda. She seems to have no sort of personality whatever–I guess we’ll see.

Oh crap, the weather just got super nasty–there’s a tornado warning. Now we don’t get to go to a meeting or smoke for the rest of the night.

Blech.

8pm

In-house NA meeting. Brenda is very young–not even 20 years old yet, she said. She’s one of those people who you can’t tell her intelligence level because her mouth is hanging open all of the time. I know she’s on Lithium, because I saw some of her meds out in the Med Room. She’s probably bipolar.

Like the rest of us.

In any case, my medication to treat my Hep-C came in today, I’ll start it tomorrow. It’s an 8-week treatment, and it’s supposed to work for over 90% of people, to be curative.

10:30pm

Hanging out with Tori–now we’re talking about sex. Sex with Nick specifically. Jolene is after him and says she hears he’s hung like a horse.

Hm.

I’d rather not think about it–it just frustrates me.

I just asked Tori where Kat and the other Residential Worker went and she said, “Probably tongue punching each other’s fart box.”

She’s so funny.

I don’t know where she comes up with this shit.

Jolene’s talking about Bloods and Crips and gangbangers.

I guess I don’t know anything about that.

May 5th, 2018

Day 306

Saturday

12pm

Brenda seems to be doing better today–she helped with planting seeds for the garden. I’m a little worried about her–she seems like a child.

I miss my Tiger.

I wonder how she’s doing.

I miss being a Vet Tech.

I miss everything from my old life.

I guess I’ll read this forgiveness book instead of wallowing in self-pity.

7pm

Off to a meeting in Coudersport. Tori’s pissed that we’re not going to Galeton because she was going to get cigarettes from Harley and told him to go to Galeton. I guess he also went shopping for clothes for her…I don’t see how she would have gotten any of them back to the Center, but whatev.

May 6th, 2018

Day 307

Sunday

2am

Can’t sleep.

Fire whistle went off and then of course tons of sirens to follow. At the meeting last night Brash and one of the women he fucks showed up, him with the dog he abuses and a boa constrictor around his neck.

Gawd.

Self-centered much?

I need to stop being so judgmental.

When we got back I finished my book on forgiveness–good book, although super religious. It suggests that you should make lists of all of the people you have bitterness towards and what they did to you, and then pretend you are face to face with them and go through a series of steps in order to forgive them and emotionally release them so that you might be set free.

I guess Brash and his Bitches would be on my list–they helped land me here.

Oh, great–they just told me I have to turn off my light.

Why is some of the staff cool and then others suck?

I hope I can sleep.

I guess the dude who used to work the night shift was going to get fired, so he quit. He was doing drugs with Jolene not so long ago, and word got out.

Okay, good night.

Homophobia and The War On Women

December 30th, 2024

Monday

2:40pm

Tiger didn’t answer the phone when I called her for her birthday. The boys went to her party and said it was nice, so that’s good.

Zuko and I have been getting a lot of comments about us being together. She tells me that several people have told her they’re “Team Jess.” I laughed it off and thought that probably Zuko’s friends just don’t want her to be with nasty bitch Tyson, who reminds me of a satanic, abusive little elf, but then Daisy said that I’m giving Zuko the wrong impression, like I’m leading her on by being her friend. I have a hard time believing that. We’re just friends and I’ve made it clear to Zuko that I’m not gay.

Then again, I feel like everybody is a little gay, and what if we were together?

Who cares?

Zuko has made it clear that she prefers monogamy, so it wouldn’t work anyway, but what’s the big deal?

Is Daisy a homophobe?

I just don’t understand.

Daisy says that Zuko is using me to make Tyson jealous.

Hm.

December 31st, 2024

Tuesday

3:29pm

Today Zuko took all of her notes and stuff from Tyson and put them in a bucket and poured water all over the whole mess. Then she ripped them up and threw them out. When I walked into the bathroom in the middle of this, she said, “Of course you would come in here.”

I don’t know what that means.

In other news, I got called into the new counselor’s office (used to be Ms. Reese, now Mr. Burns) because he was doing my parole vote sheet. He asked where I was going if I got out. I said I have to go to the Potter County Women’s Center. He said there was nothing like that on my status sheet and asked who told me that.

I said a judge.

Then he said, “I hate getting these cases that are all fucked up,” and told me I could leave.

Okay, whatever dude.

Book:

“Gates of Injustice: The Crisis in America’s Prisons” by Alan Elsner © 2006

Excerpts:

P. 25

“‘Jails and prisons have become the final destination for the mentally ill in America–it’s the most pressing issue facing psychiatry today,’ said Steven Lamberti, a psychiatrist at the University of Rochester.

In 2000, the BJS estimated that around 16 percent of inmates in state prisons were mentally ill–191,000 individuals. Adding the federal prison system and county jails dramatically raises that number, probably to at least 300,000. With such numbers, an unbiased outsider could be forgiven for concluding that being mentally ill has itself become a crime in the United States.

In recent years, women have been the fastest growing sector of the prison system. For most of the 20th century, the United States had incarcerated only around 5,000 to 10,000 women. The number held in the state prisons passed the 100,000 mark in 2003. By mid-2004, the BJS found over 190,000 women held in prisons and jails, more than double the 1990 figure. Notes criminologist Meda Chesney-Lind, ‘The war against drugs was a largely unannounced war on women.’

Statistically, African American women were two-and-a-half times more likely than Hispanics and five times more likely than Hispanics and five times more likely as whites to end up behind bars. Even more alarmingly, around 65 percent of women in state prisons had children under 18; around 5 percent were pregnant when they entered.”

P. 26

“Children are some of the saddest invisible casualties of the U.S. prison binge. The BJS, in 2000, estimated that 721,500 of America’s prisoners, excluding jail inmates, were parents of at least one child, while at least 1.5 million children had a parent in prison. One in every 14 black children has a parent in prison on any given day, but of course, over the duration of an entire childhood, the figure is much higher. Children whose parents are incarcerated experience a broad range of problems, including rage, guilt, low self-esteem and depression. They are more likely to live in poverty, more likely to suffer abuse at the hands of caregivers, more likely to fail at school, more likely to take drugs and more likely to end up in juvenile jail. Half of all juveniles in custody have a parent or close relative in prison.”

6:50pm

Great. Zuko’s girlfriend is creating a lot of drama.

Involving me.

People are saying Daisy should go to Med Line with me to protect me.

Fuck that.

This is great.

7:25pm

I survived Med Line. No one even said anything to me. I have a sneaking suspicion that Zuko likes drama.

I don’t.

She apologized to me in the bathroom.

I’ll never understand abusive relationships.

P. 29

“By 2000, over 650,000 prisoners a year were being released on parole or after completing their terms. A large number remained addicted to drugs and alcohol. Those who sincerely wanted to go straight faced crushing obstacles to rebuilding their lives. Many jobs and housing options were permanently closed to them; many social benefits were permanently denied. Little surprise that a BJS study found that over two-thirds of those released were rearrested within three years, either for parole violations or for new crimes.

While states struggled, thousands of businesses got fat off supplying prisons. As early as 1994, the Wall Street Journal proclaimed the birth of a ‘prison-industrial complex.’ The law enforcement technology industry, which produces high-tech items like the latest stab-proof vests, helmets, stun guns, sheilds, batons and chemical agents, is worth over $1 billion a year. With 2.3 million people engaged in catching criminals and putting and keeping them behind bars, accounting for a monthly payroll of $8.1 billion, the ‘correctional industry’ had become one of the largest sectors of the U.S. economy, employing more people than the combined worldwide workforces of General Motors, Ford and Wal-Mart, the three biggest corporate employers in the country. If a nation was defined by what it produced, the United States had become a prison nation.”

P. 32

“In the summer of 1971, four young professors conducted one of the most famous psychological studies ever devised–the Stanford Prison Experiment. The researchers, Philip Zimbardo, Craig Haney, W. Curtis Banks and David Jaffe, transformed a section in the basement of Stanford University’s psychology department into a mock prison.”

How It Worked

24 male college students volunteered.

They were randomly assigned to be either guards or prisoners.

A mock prison was set up in Stanford’s psychology department basement.

The study was planned to last two weeks.

Guards were given uniforms, mirrored sunglasses (to prevent eye contact), and authority. Prisoners were arrested at home, fingerprinted, and given numbers instead of names.

⚠️ What Happened

Things escalated quickly:

Guards began displaying authoritarian and abusive behaviors.

Prisoners showed signs of extreme stress, anxiety, and depression.

Some prisoners had emotional breakdowns within days.

Guards enforced humiliating punishments and psychological intimidation.

The environment became so intense that the experiment was terminated after only 6 days.

Outcome & Conclusions

Zimbardo concluded that:

Situational forces and social roles can strongly influence behavior.

Ordinary individuals can engage in cruel behavior when placed in positions of power.

Institutional settings (like prisons) can foster dehumanization.

The study became one of the most famous demonstrations of the power of social situations over individual personality.

P. 126-127

“In California, the State Auditor reported in 2001 that it cost the state $3.2 million a year to collect $5 co-payments for every visit to a prison doctor, while the program only generated $654,000 in income.”

P. 133

“In the past decade, women have been the fastest growing segment of the U.S. prison population. The number of women incarcerated in prisons or jails more than doubled, from 44,065 in 1990 to 103,310 by midyear 2004. Since 1995, the number of women in state or federal prisons has grown by an average of 5 percent a year–much higher than the 3.3 percent yearly increase in the male population.

9:55pm

Lights out.

People around here are saying they’re staying up for New Years. Two hours left of 2024.
Good riddance.

Martha made us party hats that say, “Happy New Year, bitches.”

I feel bad for Zuko.

She says she has to get out of this relationship carefully so she doesn’t get shipped to Cambridge Springs.

Daisy says we have to come up with three resolutions for the new year–one spiritual, on physical, and one emotional.

Emotional–be more emotionally vulnerable and open.

Physical–exercise at least once weekly.

Spiritual–pray more–once daily.

Neither Here Nor There: Musings from the Other Side (of the Razor Wire Fence)

Welp, Swiper finally left–thank God–and I got new state boots, which means that I have blisters the size of Volkswagon Bugs on my toes and no skin on my heels. I’m blaming this on Daisy, since she insisted that I get them, who is currently whining about both her period and a bimple, which is a word I made up for a butt pimple.

Other fun new words– “Inshitivism”–which apparently means a decline in business, but what I think should mean when you step in dog poop.

In Next Door News, Kimberly left and was briefly replaced by a 20-something woman with face tattoos who, alarmed, exclaimed, “Is THAT NORMAL?!!” when someone ripped a huge, oily fart.

Yes, Face Tattoo, that is normal.

Welcome to prison.

The food is bad.

When Face Tattoo left, she was swiftly replaced by Sondra, who hails from Cambridge Springs and calls me Pearl, for reasons unknown. I’ve certainly been called worse, but I prefer Kimberly’s name for me, which is a Spicy Ramen Noodle.

Then again, Zuko calls me her Trashy Whore Friend, because her girlfriend once, in a fit of rage, screamed that all of Zuko’s friends were trashy whores.

Oh my stars.

I’ve named the girlfriend Tyson, because she seems like the abusive type who wouldn’t hesitate to bite off a body part or two.

I guess we’ll see.

In other news, we had Bingo a couple of weeks ago, and Swiper and I called Bingo at the same time, so they called another number as a tie-breaker, and Swiper won. According to Zuko, this is a perfect metaphor for my life: I win something and then Swiper steals it from me.

SO glad she’s gone.

To replace her, enter stage left, Martha, who cooks a lot of food, doesn’t steal, and has a Brooklyn accent.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!

I talked to Motorcycle the other day, and in his Motorcycle-ness, he said, trying to be romantic, “As long as I have a face, honey, you’ll have a seat.” And then he added as an afterthought– “I just have to dust it off first.”

Funny.

NOT funny–finding somebody else’s pubes on my foot in the shower yesterday. I know they weren’t mine, because I almost cut my hoo-ha entirely off the other day shaving with a bent razor because Motorcycle and Stryder both visited me, which means I had to get my asshole inspected no less than four times in the past two days.

The bent razor massacre is a long story, but it ends with my vagina resembling a beat up naked mole rat, so, no, the pubes weren’t mine.

You’re welcome for that visual.

In order to entertain ourselves, Daisy and I have been having White Girl Dance Parties, making large Death by Chocolate desserts, and Daisy recently tried to cram her entire 5-foot, 7-inch frame into the bottom of my locker to jump out and scare me.

I almost peed myself, I laughed so hard.

And for YOUR entertainment, we’ve compiled a list of the worst cellie behaviors, all of which have actually happened to one or both of us:

  1. Never showering.
  2. Being a chronic masturbator.
  3. Thinking you can sing or rap.
  4. Being a CO-NO-BADGE when you’re really an inmate.
  5. Telling everyone you fell from an alien portal in the sky.
  6. Telling everybody that you didn’t commit the crime, but an AI version of you did.
  7. Telling everyone that Satan impregnated you and you’re having a demon baby.
  8. Humming and pacing like a deranged animal at the zoo.
  9. Shitting yourself and then crying about it.
  10. Pooping anywhere but the toilet (e.g., the floor, the shower…)
  11. Standing over the toilet to pee instead of sitting.
  12. Dry-shaving your pubes on the toilet in the cell.
  13. Eating everything (including soup and pudding) with your fingers and never washing your hands.
  14. Being a death-farter (farts so bad, you wish you were dead)
  15. Not wrapping your dirty feminine hygiene products, so then Search Team dumps them all over the floor.
  16. Being in various states of undress at all times.
  17. Leaving any of your bodily fluids on anywhere.
  18. Biting your toenails off and then spitting them off the top bunk.

Like I said–you’re welcome.

The Rumor Mill and TIger’s Birthday

MUNCY STATE PRISON

December 23rd, 2024

Monday

9pm

I had Paul look up Lolita on the internet. She may not have died by suicide. [2025 update–she did] It’s under investigation. But that’s what they always say when someone here dies. A lot of rumors are swirling around. People are saying that she fell and hit her head, and then nobody checked on her. She was dead at 6:15am, but they didn’t come to get her until 9:30am.

I wonder why.

Zuko says she would feel a little better if it wasn’t on purpose, if her last moments weren’t filled with hopelessness and despair.

I don’t know.

Is neglect better than suicide?

Is a preventable death better than on purpose?

We got a new cellie today. She gossips a lot, and imitates the Vietnamese lady down the tier.

Hm.

She says she leaves in three weeks.

December 28th, 2024

Saturday

Tiger’s birthday.

Neither she nor the boys answered the phone.

Daisy thanked me for being her friend today.

We did 80s makeup.

I’ll take it.

Jesus, The Morning After Pill, and Forgiveness

May 1st, 2018

Day 302

Tuesday

7am

I couldn’t sleep last night. I finally got up at 5am. I took a shower and did my hair, and put on a new shirt that I got yesterday, and I have to say–I look pretty damn good! I HAVE to finish that stupid 3rd essay today–my restriction goes for a month from when it’s turned in.

Ugh.

9:30am

I finished the essay. Now off to Crossroads with Tori.

Oh no! We saw a dead cat on the road.  >:(

The driver asked if we wanted to stop and give it artificial insemination.

Funny.

Oh Larry.

He’s a good guy–always has a good radio station on for us. We just passed a sign that said, “Jesus chose fishermen as his disciples.”

Huh.

Interesting.

Need to research: salivary tests for neurotransmitters to see if people are on the right medication.

–Researched–salivary tests for determining what kind of medication a person should be on are not FDA approved and are basically a scam. They don’t match or predict anything.

On the board at group:

“A real apology is changed behavior. It takes longer for a brain to transform than it does a conversation to expire.”

My therapist at group thinks that I should write my sister love letters. I think that’s a fine idea, but what will I say? I can’t pretend that my resentments toward her don’t crop up when I think of it–she was instrumental in getting my kids taken away from me three years ago…I guess I’ll try anyway, given that she’s all I’ve talked about for a week now in therapy. I talked to her ex-husband last night on the phone (which is probably why I couldn’t sleep last night), and he couldn’t tell me much except that he was keeping their 5-year old son for the time being. I wonder what’s going to happen with her.

Okay, here goes:

Elizabeth:

I wanted you to know I was thinking about you. I love you no matter what, and I want you to know that. I tried not to, but even after you did the worst thing you could ever do to me, I still find myself loving you. I really do want the best for you, and I’m worried about you. How did your doctor’s appointment go, and are you seeing your therapist regularly?

I have an inkling that you know this already, but this Bipolar business is no joke. But the good news is that it can be controlled, but you have to get help in order for that to happen. You deserve a better quality of life than you have and so do the people around you, like your son and your husband. I know it’s hard, but try to imagine for a moment what it would be like NOT to have to live like you do anymore, without the mood swings and “crashes?”

I hope that we can keep in touch when I get out in July and that our kids can get to know each other better. I know you’re in trouble right now even if you don’t, and there is help available to you, if you would just ask for it.

I love you.

Love,

Jess

Last night we were doing “discussion questions” for group, which are meant to be a little controversial, and one of the questions was, “What do you think about the ‘morning after’ pill?” Tori didn’t like the answers some of the more pro-life-leaning women had to say about that, and she said to me today, “I wanted to say, ‘I’ll  get pregnant right now and kill my baby in front of you! I’ll have a miscarriage right on your face!’”

Oh, Tori.

I had to laugh.

She’s hilarious.

I wonder what’s going to happen in the next couple of months with her. She’s talking to this new guy that’s in recovery, Harley, and it seems like he wants to kidnap her and hold her hostage for life. He’s like, in love with her and they only just met a couple of weeks ago.

Oh, dead cat again.

I’m not sure how I feel about him yet. I guess he’s okay except that he’s 46.

5pm

I had parenting classes from 2pm-3pm, then back in the car for a dentist appointment, now back to the Center. The nice weather makes me want to be out of there so fucking bad. Like how many times do I have to start my life over already??!!

I guess I’ve never tried to start it over sober, though.

In any case, I’ll probably have to go back to Coudersport again tonight for the meeting.

We’ll see.

Oh, wait, no–in house meeting tonight, I forgot.

Ugh–those are hella boring.

Day 303

12pm

Oh, I’m in a horrible mood. I haven’t smoked since 7am and I’m super tired for some reason. I wonder what’s for lunch. Big won’t let me smoke–grrrrr……but he did give me a book on Forgiveness, which I think I’ll read. Jo keeps saying she’s going to leave this place and go back to jail because she can’t talk to her boyfriend–who is an abusive fuck, if you ask me.

Okay–

Book:

“Forgiveness” by Charles Stanley © 1987

This book is almost as old as me.

“Forgiveness is the act of setting someone free from an obligation to you that is a result of a wrong done against you.”

“The three essential elements of forgiveness are injury, a debt resulting from the injury, and a cancellation of the debt.”

“Four reasons by the person with an unforgiving spirit is the real loser are:

  1. Unforgiveness, by its very nature, prevents individuals from following through on many of the specifics of the Christian life and practically necessitates that they walk by the flesh rather than by the Spirit.

‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law…If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.’ –Galatians 5:22-23, 25”

  1. The destructive nature of an unforgiving spirit is such that it is not limited to one relationship. Resentment and other negative feelings spill over into other relationships.
  2. The rejection connection: when a person is wronged in some way, whether in marriage, business, friendship, or some other relationship, rejection occurs. The classic case would be when a guy breaks up with his girlfriend because he has found another girl. In her struggle with rejection, the girl swears she will never trust another male.

Rejection evolves into an unforgiving spirit, and eventually into bitterness, taking a terrible toll. The person is left with a deep sense of emptiness, an inner sense that something is missing.

  1. Since the person with the unforgiving spirit is usually waiting for the other person to make restitution, a great deal of time may go by. During this time, fleshly patterns of behavior and incorrect thought patterns develop. Even after an unforgiving spirit is corrected, the side effects can take years to deal with, especially in the area of relationships.

Lolita…

December 20th, 2024

Friday

12:04am

I can’t sleep. I’ve been basically sleeping for a week, so Daisy made me (I was willing) drink a bunch of coffee to get out of my funk, which worked, but now I can’t sleep. Commissary tomorrow, so I’ll have my own coffee and I won’t be forced to share it with Swiper, because she left. Thank God for that, but now we have to worry about who we’ll get to replace her. At least I have a lock now, for my locker. Ironically, Swiper gave me hers, so I couldn’t use it while she was here because, obviously, she knew the combination.

I’m glad she’s gone and I hope she doesn’t come back.

I wonder if I’ll sleep at all tonight. I told Stryder that I was going to write Sassypants a letter and send it to him so he could send it to her. I have a virtual visit with him tomorrow afternoon.

Boy, there are farts galore this time of night. At least Swiper’s not here to announce every single one.

People fart, lady.

Get over it.

I wonder if she’ll keep stealing things, which is what got her in prison four times. My feeling is yes. I’ve been really depressed about another Christmas in jail. And next Christmas too. I still can’t believe my stupid lawyer said he didn’t know what I was talking about when I mentioned petitioning the court for a shorter stay at the Women’s Center.

Asshole.

No word on Cool. I take it he’s in a permanently psychotic state these days. Paranoid schizophrenic, they say.

I can’t say I’m surprised.

Sad, but not surprised.

The new lady next door, Sondra, calls me Pearl, for reasons unknown. She says it’s off some 70s TV show. She’s still up too, watching TV. I wish I had a TV, but it’s too expensive to ask anyone for. Nobody has an extra $230 laying around, except maybe my parents, and they’re too stingy with money to ask.

I’m afraid this place, this system, is breaking my spirit. I think about the writing I did in 2007-08, when I wrote Kidowed during and after Kaylee’s death, and I still had a sense of humor. I don’t anymore, it seems. I used to be funny, seemingly effortlessly, even during those dark times, as if I still had hope that things would be better in the future if I just could get through this part. But it didn’t. Not for the next 17 years it didn’t.

How much can one person take?

I don’t have any hope for the future anymore. I don’t even believe that I have the smallest iota of control over my life anymore. I used to believe I was in charge of my life, and that I made the good things in my life happen.

Now, that idea seems monumentally stupid.

Now, life seems very random and luck-based. Self-determination seems like an oxymoron. In this Short Reads class I’m going to on Tuesdays, there is this teacher who says she doesn’t believe in God. My problem is that I believe in God, but I don’t like Him or trust Him, because he has treated me like he hates me. Why does nothing good ever happen to me? My life is just misery following misery. I wonder if people who commit suicide don’t believe in Hell, or they believe in it, but figure that it must be better than this shithole life? Eternal burning in hellfire sounds better than life on Earth?

I can believe it these days.

December 21st, 2024

Saturday

7:02pm

Cool came home to my parent’s house. Apparently he’s staying in the apartment most of the time. Seems weird to me that he came home to not be alone, and is now isolating himself. I had hoped things would become more normal if he was around family. He brought his dog, who he renamed Falcore from Sunshine.

Hm.

I’d be interested to see what he’s posting on social media now that he’s home. I hope he doesn’t act like a crazy wacko in front of the kids.

December 22nd, 2024

Sunday

11:55am

It is rumored that Lolita came back to prison after only being gone for four days, and that she may have killed herself today. There was a weird lockdown and everything was running late, and Zuko just told me in the bathroom. I heard that he was back with new charges a couple of days ago, and that she was “freaking out” in the Infirmary, but then I didn’t hear anything after that.

She gave me her eyeshadow when she left.

I’m wearing it today.

4:08pm

It’s true.

Lolita killed herself.

Zuko cried.

I hugged her for a long time.

I’m incredibly sad.

After all that she had survived, she died all alone in a cinderblock cell…Zuko kept saying, “I wish somebody would have helped her…there’s no help here…(sob).”

This place will crush your soul…although it sounded more like it blasted hers to smithereens. There’s rumors of screaming and blood and a broken window…I wonder if the shattering of a soul makes the same noise as a window spider-webbing into a million pieces…

It’s inconceivable that such small buildings can house so much pain…you’d think they’d just burst apart with the weight of it.

But instead, people’s brains crack in half, and their spirits snap too.

I wonder how such a monumental happening could not make a noise?

I wonder if she cried,

Or if there was a steely resolve,

When she decided to die,

Instead of living

In this brick and mortar cage.

When she took her last breath,

Was she relieved?

Was she finally free?

Sometimes I wonder

How the Earth doesn’t shift on its axis

Every time a soul gives up

They talk about strength, resilience,

And the indomitable human spirit.

But I know a place that can dominate

A human spirit,

Conquer it,

And smash it,

Stomp it,

Until it loses all hope.

And the despair takes over

Like a creeping black mist,

And the spirit starts thinking about Heaven,

Instead of this Hell on Earth

That is Muncy State Prison

In Pennsylvania,

America.

Land of the free?

Is she finally free?

Did it make a noise?
